My Grandfather, Myles Standish ~ The Short And Angry Man.

Myles Standish was my 8th great grandfather. He was the military captain (the police) on the Mayflower. the ship that landed in Massachusetts in 1620 . He was one of the Founding Fathers of the Plymouth Colony.
Myles was a short red headed man with a terrible temper and caused the Pilgrims all kinds of embarrassment.
When I was a kid, learning about him in school he was treated with respect. I was proud to be related to him. The elementary history classes taught the history “facts” but not the real story.
Plymouth Colony stole the land they built their town on and the corn the Natives had saved for winter. The natives as in all history got treated badly.
As an adult I enjoy reading about Myles and found him to be an interesting character that did some foolish things. He was known for his temper.
His own people called him Captain Shrimp. (angry short guy)
The story that opened my eyes to the real Myles Standish was a book by Nathaniel Philbrick. One of the stories he mentioned was a meeting with a native chief. The chief made fun of Myles because he was short and short tempered.
The chief nicknamed him as ”The Little Pot that Boils Over Quickly” Myles was not happy about that and at their next meeting with the Chief, Myles stole his knife and killed the Chief and two bodyguards.
The colony was not happy with his attitude. But Myles Standish stayed as the Colony’s leader and kept them alive for the rest of his life.
My friend @BelleStarr reminded me of our history from the beginning of New England. She has an interesting relative in New England's history too.
The best and most interesting book I read about the colony is MAYFLOWER ~ A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick. He told the story better than anyone else that I've read.
HOW DID AMERICA BEGIN? This simple question launches acclaimed author Nathaniel Philbrick on an extraordinary journey to understand the ...

No red heads in our family, funny how he was famous for his hair color and temper and no one carries it on at least in my branch of the Family tree.

@PainsOnSlate I remember reading about and learning about Myles Standish and the Mayflower in school. It is an honor to meet his great granddaughter.

@RasmaSandra That is kind of you to say, there are probably millions of his relatives around now. I'm just glad my dad kept the family tree up to date. But it was just our family line.

I'm surprised you studied US history where you lived. We never learned Italian History or Swiss history either, that I remember.

@PainsOnSlate yes my family history has a few nuggets - my dad's ancestors fled Protestant prsecution in 15th century France, worked as canal navvies, got collectively and legally thrown out of the city of Leeds (no idea why) and worked in Manchester for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

I am just curious was Myles Standish English then or?
This is amazing to know your heritage and history that far back Paints.
Yes, he had a foul temper for sure by reading this.
My bloodline is very direct, no research needed as my parents are both from the old country lolz

He was from England. We don't have the family tree from before him but we have the family tree starting with him, his children and down to us, all the history in the US.

@PainsOnSlate . What a character he was. Not one to have as an enemy. Do you have a temper? I coloured my hair red at one stage, and all my friends said it suited my temper. Now, they say I am an undercover redhead...

Having red hair and a short fuse seems to go together. I can't think of a single red haired person in our family. That's actually kind of strange. I haven't found any famous relatives in my background except Noah. Haha!
