Update on Disability Tax Credit

The National Benefit Authority called me back this morning. Since Friday the amount of $1,392+ has already been deposited into our account. I asked why only what appeared to be a one year payment. They said this was for 2005 and there was a delay. The rest will be a lump sum payment of approximately $17,000 and will take 2-24 weeks. I expect the delay is because it is tax season so they are busy and they may also be waiting on our 2015 tax return before they give out the rest. Not the reason for the delay but the reason why it's going to take so long to get the rest. So, resting easy for now but wish we had the money as we need it now. Ah well, by the time we get it we will be prepared to re-build our back deck. Fingers crossed all that is owed to me comes my way. What I'm really kicking myself for is the advertisement I have been seeing on the internet to apply for this tax benefit. I could have done it without the help of the NBA and could have been as equally successful, only the first time I applied, and wouldn't cost me a bunch of dough.

I heard about NBA . . but they get a big chunk from our tax benefit. I am thinking of doing it myself; but got no idea how to do it. It looks like you know how to claim it by yourself. Would be so kind to give me (an others) a hint!

That is definitely good news. At least you now know what you'll be getting and have an idea of when.

I hope it's sooner rather than later.

@patgalca I hope it is too. It's always better sooner rather than later. I'm sure it'll make a difference for you guys, financially.

Gosh, that is fantastic! I wish someone was offering me 17,000. That would be awesome!

In the meantime we have had to make several withdrawals on our retirement savings, take out two more mortgages on our house after we had paid it off, and live in the overdraft and line of credit. We have a lot of expenses coming up with hubby's birthday in May meaning two license plate renewals as well as his driver's license, and one car needs repairs before it will pass emissions tests to get the plate renewed. And with the money I will have to pay the NBA for applying on my behalf, I don't expect there be much left over. It would be nice to be able to take a vacation but I'm not sure that will happen.

I'm glad you are finally getting what is due you. Can't say I'm surprised the government found some excuse for making you wait.

I wonder exactly what the delay is. I mean they were able to give me the money for tax year 2005. Why not all of it?

@patgalca As you probably anticipate, you may have to give them a few polite nudges to get them to come across with the remainder. I wouldn't be surprised to learn they are hoping you'll be happy with the one check and won't keep after them for the rest.

@DWDavis It's not really up to me to do the nudging. That's what I'm paying the National Benefit Authority for.

That will be a very handy lump sum to get. It's been a long time coming, hasn't it?

Well, I don't have it yet. It will probably be a full 20 years by the time I get it.
