A Film and a Concert

Last Sunday we went with friends to a nearby town for a very special event. We were treated to a short concert then had a gourmet supper after which we sat down to watch a film.
The musician was Emily Barker who is getting quite a reputation for herself as a singer/songwriter. She is now branching out into writing for film. She grew up in Bridgetown to the south of us but is now based overseas. She wrote the theme music for the TV shows, Wallander, and The Shadow Line.
She and her group performed with Frank Turner at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012. More recently she was approached to write the music for a little gem of a film called Hector which features a homeless Scotsman who tries to reconnect with his siblings after disappearing for a number of years.
Emily comes back to Bridgetown each year to see her family. Last summer she performed at one of our house concerts at the Music Shack and was very well received. It was good to catch up with her again and I can thoroughly recommend the film although I have to say when I watch a very Scottish film I just about need subtitles to keep up with the dialogue.
The photo shows Emily getting organised to play at the Music Shack. The audience are settling back and relaxing waiting for the show to start. It would be dark within a short time although it looks very light here.

It's nice to keep up with local talent. I saw a small group from the local area when I was in college. It was easy to follow their careers. Maybe you have heard of them, The Doors.

@ElizabethWallace So many great singers die well before their time. Mostly they don't handle the pressures and lifestyle very well.

@ElizabethWallace And we've just read where an American student stole a propaganda banner in North Korea - as a joke - and now faces maybe 15 years gaol with hard labour. What is wrong with these kids? Don't they have any brains at all? North Korea of all places!

It looks like it was a very peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable setting! I can imagine everyone probably had a very good time! Are you a concert promoter, or something? Do you run a music and/or concert venue?

@JudyEv How come you stop the concerts after April 13? Does it have to do with the seasons or weather?

We have a 'tin shed' - Music Shack - and run about 3 concerts every summer and perhaps an indoor one in winter. The Shire restricts us to 100 people outdoors. The concerts are non-profit so the performers get the gate money unless we agree on a price previously which some of them prefer to do. If you search 'music shack' there are a couple of posts about it and we have a website. The concerts are good fun. We have our last one for the season - indoors - in April. We can seat 50 in the lounge.

@moffittjc I guess because I'm in Australia, 'our' music shack comes up near the top. We have some lovely nights. The first were a bit stressful - for me anyway - we have things down to a fine art now and mostly it all happens without too much concentrated effort. Last one for the season coming up on April 13.

She does, doesn't she? Some people's good nature just shines through in their face.

Sorry, I don't know what brand of guitar she plays. Here's another photo in case it helps. Vince reckons she had a different guitar at Bridgetown but I guess most guitarists have more than one.

How wonderful. Now that I have heard of her, I will look for her credits in movies and TV shows. I'm sure you enjoyed the concert.

She is very pretty and has a lovely nature to go with it. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting her for the concert at our place.

That looks like fun. Our library here in Manitou does a summer lawn concert every Tuesday.

@JudyEv - We live a block away, but sometimes we don't go. Depends on whether we have time or something else going on.

Thanks. Our audiences think so too although they're more likely finishing their day.

Her parents are very proud - as they should be - and her Mum is absolutely lovely and a great promoter. :)

Oh no, she sure doesn't! I thought she'd be in her 20s..., she could even pass for early 20s!
