Death and Re-Birth

It's inevitably sad when someone dies. I had been expecting it for some time, since he had been getting slower and had been needing more frequent care and attention for some time. However, yesterday, life-support failed and the screen went blank. I tried resuscitation but to no avail.
After some inspection to ascertain the cause of death, I found that the power supply's fan had seized up and the thing had overheated. After some deliberation, a trip to the local PCWorld seemed in order. I had already been considering replacing the desktop (which could only run Windows Vista) with a laptop, so I had done some preliminary research, and the result was that, half an hour later, I arrived home with a brand new HP laptop (and with my bank balance a tad lighter).
The season seems appropriate. I had been able to save the requisite amount through some work I did at the end of last year, so that was the 'nest-egg' waiting to be hatched. As it's nearly Easter, it was time for this to be realised and so, from the ashes of the phoenix, a new bird arises!
I have done most of the necessary setting up - made a Restore disk, installed my preferred browsers and set up the home pages for each - and now I'm just getting used to using a laptop's keyboard and finding my way around Win 10!
How organised would you be if your computer (or any other essential device) failed?

I thought by reading your first paragraph that someone had lost their life, not your computer. Wow! I am glad to find out it was just your computer.
How do you think you will like Windows 10? Is it a big learning curb to it, or is it similar to windows 8? How do you feel about Microsoft having prying eyes into everything you do on your computer, or do you think that is just a rumor?
I try to back everything up on a flash drive once a week, so I will no lose much if my computer does crash.

So far I've found Win 10 not so very much different from Vista and 7 (which are the ones I've been using most up till now). I'm glad that I missed out on using Win 8. By all accounts, it was a disaster!
Nearly all of my devices - network, printer, external drives, mouse &c - have attached without any problem and most of the setup was self-explanatory and easily done. The only one I'm having problems with at the moment is the scanner and that is only because Epson like people to follow the instructions in the user manual, which isn't currently to hand.
If you're upgrading from Win 7 or 8, I would recommend doing so. It's free, after all.

@owlwings I 7 now I have been considering a new laptop but with so much negativity about 10 it scares me. You make it sound much easier than others have said. Now you have me thinking....I know I should bite the bullet and just upgrade.

First off, commiserations on the demise of your old friend and congratulations on your acquisition of the replacement. In the past when I've been in that situation I've been lucky enough to afford the most simplest machine on the market. My current laptop is an HP and was running Windows 7 but I have now gone to W 10. I do so miss Hearts and Solitaire and I;m annoyed at having to sign in every 5 minutes when my machine goes to sleep while I'm not paying attention.

I just bought a dell laptop inspiron 14 two years ago. Though my brother said it was bad idea but so far it worked well, but as I saved my files and photos it started to get slower and slower. but I've been doing my best to delete unnecessary files. In fact, I'm saving mylot earnings to buy mom a new laptop so that she can rest that two decade laptop that's being used for a while.

I think I would just move on and do something else. Right now I have the option of iPad or laptop. Generally the iPad is used, but when needed the laptop comes out of the closet.

It's amazing how much we depend on our computers nowadays. It would be quite a shock should something go wrong with them. It would be an adjustment to go back to the "old" days before computers. We're going to get a new tablet as our old one gave up the ghost on Monday. It will have Windows 10 on it. Looking forward to seeing how the OS works and if we like it enough we will up date our main computer to it. Have a blessed day

If the existing one become damage then only a new one can replace. So congrats for the new laptop.
