Happy Surprise

Technology should simplify our lives and make them easier. Sometimes this is the case, and sometimes the reverse happens. A few years ago, my tax person sold her business. I tried to stay with the new guy, but he made significant mistakes two years in a row. Therefore, this year I went with a recommendation from a small business owner I know. I had my taxes done last week very close to my home.
The office was a little too messy for my taste, but the staff was friendly. When I met the new guy, I decided not to make snap decisions about him. You see, he is a little “funny looking”. I’m glad I withheld making an opinion. He is a nice guy, smart and did everything, including submitting my taxes electronically, while I was there with him.
That has never happened before. Usually, I submit my documents and wait weeks for them to be finished. This morning, there was a deposit to my bank account from the state tax board. It was my refund already. It sure made my day. I love technology when it works like this. Easy peasy.
Has technology surprised you lately?

I don't. Never have. There is too much to know and too many chances to make a mistake.

@ElizabethWallace As long as my income doesn't go above a certain level then I am exempt. The older we are the more income we are allowed before paying tax.

@jaboUK Wow. I just hope that number is way above the poverty level. Here, there is not accommodation for seniors, just income.

What? Why don't you need to do taxes? Is there an age limit in the U.K.? So many differences between your homeland and mine when speaking of the treatment of seniors.

Ours was submitted electronically too. We love that option.

Not only is that great, but electronic payment of our refunds is even better, and so fast.

The last three years it was a far different story. It took months. So this was a surprise for sure.

You must be kidding. A school owned piece of equipment actually worked? Now that's a shock.

Me too. I have now put back into my savings account all the money I spent on my trip to Key West last December. This makes me happy.

I'm still waiting for that one, but the state was more, so it was nice that it is here already.

Yes, I love the way technology has enhanced the way that we get our information to our accountants at tax time. Our son lives about 90 minutes from our accountant, but thanks to emails, scanners and couriers, he has no need to seek out another accountant closer to him-that and the fact that Mom and Dad will pay for his while they pay for their own. I do have to drive about 25 minutes to drop our stuff off to her today. I won't stay, she can contact us with the damage, and then we'll slip out to pay her.

The tax accountant I had (before she sold her business) was in Ventura, and I am in Orange County (about two hours away by car). I used technology after I moved from the area. It worked fine with her, but the man who bought her business was prone to errors. They had nothing to do with technology though. He is just a screw-up.

I heard about scammers targeting tax refunds, but I am happy that this did not happen to me.

The speed of tax returns these days has been a pleasant improvement. There are many things I like about technology ... except when it breaks down! LOL

I am with you on that, which is why when it works like this, it's a pleasant surprise.

Glad things went smoothly for you and getting your taxes done. Technology did surprise me last night. We ordered a new tablet as our old one stopped working. Mike worked on it to no avail. We took it to best buy and they couldn't get it up and running again. This new tablet has the windows 10 operating system and I was surprised at how much I hate learning a new way of doing things. But being on it some more this evening I am beginning to understand it better. Have a blessed evening

I don't mind learning something new if it was my idea. I despise being forced to do so, however.

@ElizabethWallace that is how I am as well. I think they keep updating and making the operating systems more complicated than they really need to be.

No kidding. I don't know if I like that. They are acting like a bank, but not paying interest.
