The Loss of everyone's favourite Grandpa

Those in the entertainment field have had it rough this year. So many have been lost to us, from singers David Bowie and Glenn Fry, actor Alan Rickman, and now one reason why I was a fan of the reality series, Gold Rush. Gold Rush follows several groups of goldminers in the Klondike and Alaska, and one of my favourites to watch is Parker Schnabel, and especially his grandpa, John. John, who adores Parker, was full of honest wisdom about both mining and life, and whenever he appeared, I couldn't help but smile. Today, sadly, Mr. Schnabel passed away at the very grand and venerable age of 96. Sigh. Everyone should have a grandpa like John Schnabel. He is going to be missed by a lot of people.

That is very sad. 96 is a great old age. He must have had some wonderful experiences on the goldfields.

He's mentioned in the book "If you Lived here, I'd Know Your Name." Evidently he didn't start mining until he was 65.

@Telynor How about that? I wonder what set him off mining.

@JudyEv He wanted to try something new. From everything that I've heard, keeping active and learning new things is what keeps old age at bay. Alaska has plenty of opportunities to mine for gold -- I tried panning for some at a tourist trap near Fairbanks, and actually got some.

I had a very long comment written that, because I'm baked, made absolutely no sense whatsoever. So I'll just say R.I.P.
