Supporting Swans

As part of the morning walk, I went along to 'Little Britain' lake for a sit and watch. As it was a fairly bright morning, I thought there would be a fair amount of birds floating about, but it was rather quiet, and there were only a pair of ducks near me. As I walked around the lake, I came across a couple of people who were feeding the birds. There were plenty of swans, geese and ducks. Now I knew where they all were. The ducks I had seen earlier hadn't got the message about the free meal! The people were wearing jackets with the legend Swan Support on the back. They weren't applying the rules too rigidly judging by the numbers of non-swans tucking in. I didn't know this happened at the lake and I am guessing they drop off food at other places as well, which may account for all the birds in the area.

What a nice surprise all the sorts of water foul Ron! You had to hunt a bit for them. Nice they feed them.

If it had been a hard winter, I am sure it would make all the differnce to the birds

@TiarasOceanView As so many people use the canal path, the swans don't mind folks walking close by. Unless they have young, then there can be some hissing

Winter is the worst time of year for swans.

@Ronrybs In the summer all the birds are over fed, but in the winter they often starve. Swans seem particularly prone to getting snagged in fishing line I recall when I lived near Windsor and these guys were always having to rescue them.

@pgiblett Yes, read about that and that they swallow the sink weights by accident. Fairly sure we are lead free now, but I don't go fishing

If they are feeding the birds would account for the birds in that area. It is good to just sit and watch the ducks, swans, geese and other flying creatures.

@Ronrybs The ducks do seem to bicker a lot I would agree but it is nice to seem them by the lake.

Yes, I find it quite relaxing, although the ducks never seem to stop bickering!

I didn't know there was such a thing. The birds are quick to learn where and when feeding times are, aren't they?

First time I'd heard of this. The birds learn fast

That's nice. Always fun to see ducks and swans. There's now an environment thing about not feeding ducks because we are "ruining" them.

I wouldn't be surprised, they'll spend all their time waiting for free food instead of looking for it like ordinary ducks!

I love going to feed ducks and geese. Never fed a swan, though.

@Ronrybs That is nice that people take care of them and want to feed them.
