Among the Things I Don't Understand....

Turbo Tax software box

I was in Office Depot yesterday to get some ink cartridges for my printer. As soon as I walked in I was bombarded with stacks of tax preparation software. "Turbo Tax! Only $49.99!!!" It's one of those things I don't understand. Why spend money on software that (a) is obsolete after April 15 (or August 15 if you file an extension), but more significantly, (b) is $50 more than many sites charge to file your taxes. The IRS web site says that anyone with an income under $62,000 can file for free. I would think that anyone who owns a business or who's in that "win the lottery and you're still making less than they do" stratosphere would have such a complicated tax return that simple software wouldn't help. I would also think that most businesses use an accountant so they can get every deduction and avoid any super-fine print that might get them in trouble with the IRS. Oh, well, just four more weeks or so and the software will be off the shelves. Here's a Homer & Jethro song about taxes to give you a laugh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HDGR1-I2og

I guess there are enough that will buy the package to make it worthwhile selling.

I don't have to do taxes anymore since I don't work. But I always did mine free online....
