~What Do You Eat On Good Friday?~

When I was a child, I didn't realize what Good Friday was about so I used to hate having to give up meat for the day. Now that I am older and understand it obviously giving up meat for a day is nowhere near close to what Jesus gave up for us. I totally get it now. Today for breakfast we had cereal. For lunch we had grilled cheese sandwiches and for dinner we are going to have Fettucine Alfredo. What things do you eat on Good Friday?

I understand the religious significance of Good Friday. I know many who practice giving up meat on Good Friday and also something for lent as well.

@LovingMyBabies It is good that you are keeping this tradition and passing it on to your family.

Anything really but we do have hot cross buns. I think you are probably more religious than me. Happy Easter to you and your family.

@suzzy3 I don't really use the word religious, I know what you mean though. I just prefer to call it a relationship rather than religion since it's not works that I do. =) Happy Easter to you too!

I usually avoid meat and it's products (eggs, cheese etc.) and I do this for the Holy Week. I think about it as a detox week. It's surprising to see how many things we can eat that don't involve meat, most of my meals contain vegetables, pasta, legumes, olives and seafood. I find that chocolate is the hardest to avoid, even when compared to meat!

@besweet You do it for a week? Oh wow, we only do it for a day so I didn't know some people do it for a week. I love pasta so that works for me!

@LovingMyBabies My mother was following this tradition and I am keeping it until today. My friends don't follow these habits any more, but I have connected it with my family and I enjoy it! Pasta is great and I have to say that I am saving some money as well during the meat-free week. Only seafood can be a little expensive.

@LovingMyBabies I am not sure why Lent or certain aspects of Good Friday are not part of our religious traditions. Knowing what it stands for , I do think it is a beautiful gesture and respect those that practice it.

When I was a child I used to refuse to eat on a good Friday. But then when i was getting older i didn't care anymore. Does that make me a bad person? I think not. I just think that I am not that strong physically, mentally and spiritually to skip food. I have read a book written by one pastor that when one is weak physically and spiritually, one must not skip food as it would be giving the devil the chance to attack you. someday, when i'm ready, i will fast.

@toniganzon Oh I don't fast either, I can't do that because I have seizures if I don't eat. But not eating meat for a day I can do that and I do.

I never heard of not eating meat on Good Friday. I wonder where that began at. For us we had an early start to our day so coffee before we left. On the way home we got a hotdog for lunch and dinner was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Have a blessed evening.

@Dena91 I don't really know where it began, I believe it was started in the Catholic Church actually. It is just a symbol of Jesus giving His life up for us so we give up meat on Good Friday for Him.

Since I'm here at my parents' house, no one cooked meat for Good Friday. We had fish, veggies and noodles/pasta with tuna.
