As a child have you ever been offered a ride by a stranger?

If you have at one time in your childhood been walking home from school or the library or a friend's house and been offered a ride by a complete stranger, did you get in and risk your life by taking a ride by a stranger you never saw before?
I did only once and I was lucky I was not abducted. Back in the 1960's, people trusted strangers more then than today. I think I already mentioned it in a comment on another discussion but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this experience as a young person and did anything scary happen as a result?

@lookatdesktop I agree, I was a child in the 50's, the world was not as dangerous as it is in our days, but you never know who you can meet.

@LadyDuck , and this is why I maintain that no body should ride Uber cabs. These guys are not bonded or trustworthy. If they did bother to do a criminal background check on them there would be far fewer out there. My advice about riding a cab is to stick with the ones you already are familiar with like Checker and Yellow.

Your parents were very loving and supportive of you and did right by you. If more parents told their children to just say no to stranger danger, it would solve many cases of missing and exploited children in just about every country on the planet.

When I was in my early teens and walked everywhere (before I could drive) it was very dangerous. I guess it doesnt help living in the city. Older men would stop all the time, sometimes just to catcall and other times in luring manners. I had one guy get out of his car and chase me! I was so afraid I would have gotten kidnapped but luckily I was on track and in shape back then. Ha.

@lookatdesktop Yes! Thanks for the advice. I drive mainly now...there are some predators out there. And same goes to you by the way! :-)

If you have to walk in the future, go with a friend. Take a dog. Carry a weapon. But mainly when in doubt just run!

Nope never have I been offered a ride.
But I have gotten in a ride with someone I did not know before but only because I was going with my cousins and that person was my cousins' cousin boyfriend and he was our ride home.

Well, that is a whole different situation. I am referring to complete strangers who appear friendly but that could be child abductors like they talk about on America's Most Wanted and MissingKids.com

@lookatdesktop I know! Just my closest story to a stranger but not really a stranger.

Well, you did the right thing. Best to err on the side of caution. This is a good thing because it could have not been someone your mom had sent and in that case you could have been just another statistic on the international missing kids posters listings.

I was once offered a ride by a lady I did not know but I recognized her car as being from a house down the street from ours. I was walking home from school and it started raining. She stopped and offered me a ride. I was wary but didn't want to get soaked, so I took the ride. It turned out all right as she dropped me off right at my door. But my mom went ballistic and let me know to never do that again.

Glad you were safe and don't blame your mom for getting angry. All parents should be as considerate of their children's safety.

I had experienced that many times already. Even just recently, I rode on a stranger's car and this happened on midnight. But what is good in our place, is that, until now the people can be trusted. Our place is just a small town where most people are religious, kind and honest. Well, I also looked at the face and his eyes to know if he was a good guy, before riding his car.

You were merely lucky. Looking into a stranger's eyes is still not the best way to know how safe it will be. This is one of the main reasons abductions have become so prevalent.
