What other languages do you know?

Czech Republic

I wonder how many other languages you all know. Even your maternal language is another one. I like the quote "How many languages you know, that many times you are a man." ... well it is said in the Czech Republic, I am not sure I translate it well. But I would love to learn as much languages as possible. Now I know Czech (maternal), passively Slovak (it is so close to Czech), English, German (quite understand but it is hard to speak), French (beginner)... I learnt Arabic for a half of a year, but forgot most of it :( What about you?

Oh, you are really brave. Korean and Japanese must be one of the hardest languages, at least as I see them. French must be easy afte learning these two, isn't it? And eight native Filipino languages? It is really good on its own :-) Do you use all of them in Philippines?

@DomisTlapis I need to. Yes I use them to survive looking like a fool lol. In one place people speak minimum of five or more. Living in this diverse society makes it a necessity.

@geizshan But at least it is much more interesting. Do they understand each other? I mean people speaking in different Filipino languages.

@DomisTlapis Yes. It is easy to learn and some of our words have Spanish influence. Also, it is one of my subjects when I was still in College.

I studied Spanish before in Livemocha. I once had many friends who speak Spanish and all of them were very generous in helping me. It was easy for me to learn Spanish for some of the words we use have Spanish origins. I also know a bit of Mandarin; however, compare to Spanish, I know more Spanish words than Mandarin. At present, I am studying Korean language. I hope I can learn it fast.

@DomisTlapis Korean is very challenging for me. Maybe because it is only my boyfriend who can help me with Korean. I do not have other Korean friends who can help me unlike in Spanish. They said that if you really want to learn a foreign language, you must visit the country where that particular foreign language is used.

@annierose Yeah that is true. You can learn anything like crazy at home, but it is complitely different out there. And when man does not speak often, it is bad too. I am glad I can speak English at least some time. But I cannot speak other language with anyone - that is why I am that bad at any other language. You are absolutely right.

Another brave person who learns Korean. Is it hard? I have enough problems with French, and it has the same letter as english (at least most of them)... Spanish is beautiful, I used to want to learn Spanish too. In the end, I am learning French instead. But I would love to know at least basics of Spanish :)

@DomisTlapis I'd say French is common mostly in Quebec. Outside, most people don't speak French unless they live in a Francophone community - or originally come from Quebec like me!

As far as International language is concerned, I just know English. However I know various languages within India itself.

English is the basic. To know various languages of India is important too. Are they different from each other?

Hi! I think learning more than two languages is very difficult. I know Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay and English. I know some Hokkien and Japanese language. Honestly, I think I am not good in all the languages I know.

@DomisTlapis I heard people said that language of German is very hard to learn. For Cantonese, it is what Hong Kongese language. For Hokkien, it is Taiwanese language. Both are Chinese. But, there are totally different from Mandarin.

But I think you are really good even you do not think so. If you know at least a little bit of Japanese, it is complitely different language - with different letter and even making sentences. I have never had enough of self-confidence to start learnign something asian (except of Arabic)... And I have never heard about Cantonese or Hokkien language! What does it look like?

@hoong143 Oh I see... So they look like Chinese. But they are not the same. I even did not know Hong Kong has its own language. There are so many various Chinese languages. It is amazing.

That is what my granny thinks. When I had English and Germany at high school, she asked me if it does not confuse me. Sometimes it happens that I know the word in different language that I am speaking - often even in Czech... lol But being fluent in three languages is very good!

I speak English (maternal) and French (2nd official language.) I had been working at learning some Spanish and German on DuoLingo (though I've been slacking off ) One day would I love to learn Gaelic, and maybe some Dutch or one of the Scandinavian languages. I've watched some really interesting movies and TV series that are coming out of places like Denmark and Sweden. I can hear the similarities to English when I watch with the captions, and all of these related languages very much intrigue me.

Yeah, I know Duolingo.. I learn French there, or at least I am trying to. But have not been there for a while :( This is not the way I am going to learn French, hihi :) Gaelic or Dutch, it must be really nice. I have always wanted to try to learn Finnish... But it is so hard as I have heard. But good luck with it!

@Ruby3881 what TV and movies do you watch where Sanish and Swedish is used? Well when I was younger (like high school) I listened to Finnish music a lot. They have wonderful bands and they are very talented. I also like their anthem. That is when I listened it for the first time. Actually it is the only Scandinavian language I have ever heard. And it is quite challenging too - in Czech, we have seven cases. (For example German has four cases). There are almost the most cases any language has. But Finnish has twelve cases. Much more challenging :-)

@DomisTlapis Why Finnish specifically? Do you know someone who speaks it? I'm not sure I've really been exposed to it, as yet. Danish and Swedish, definitely. I've been drawn to them by watching TV and movies.
