April 1st In History

Tomorrow is April 1st. Some call it April Fool’s Day and many jokes and tricks are often played, so be careful. You never know what someone has in mind for this day. However, there are other historical things that have happened on April 1st. Here are few that I found. Picture by Pixabay. I have this exact picture myself that I took from Waikiki Beach. In 1945, American forces invaded OKINAWA during World War ll. I lived on this island for 18 months in 1962-1963. My oldest son was born there. In 1853, Cincinnati Ohio became the FIRST U.S. city to PAY its firefighters a regular salary. In 1918, the Royal Air Force was established in Britain. In 1933, Nazi Germany began persecuting Jews with a boycott of Jewish-owned businesses. In 1946, tidal waves struck the Hawaiian Islands, killing some 170 persons. In 1960, the FIRST weather satellite, TIROS-One was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA. In 1970, President Nixon signed a measure banning cigarette advertising on radio and television, to take effect after January 1, 1971. In 1983, tens of thousands of anti-nuclear demonstrators linked arms in a 14-mile human chain spanning three defense installations in rural England. This is as far in history that I got. I hope some of you can add to the list. Oh, and actresses, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell and Ali MacGraw were all born on April 1st.

On Horse Guards there is a display of aircraft to mark the 98 anniversary of the RAF. I'd have waited until 20158, but there you go

Not sure what you mean that you would "have waited until 20158" Yes, it's been 98 years. They may do a big celebration when the 100 year anniversary gets here.

This is older history, rather than recent history: On April 1, 1816, novelist Jane Austen wrote a letter to the Prince Regent, declining his suggestion to write a historical romance. “I could not sit down to write a serious romance under any other motive than to save my life," she explained. She's my favorite author, so I couldn't resist mentioning that event.

Oh, I really like her novels also. I love the movies based on her novels also, and I watch them every chance I get. I see them on Netflix and tune in from time to time. I just had my own Romance novel published a few month ago. I'm working on my second novel now. You can find it on lulu.com under my name: Alice Henry

@IreneVincent Congrats on the publication. I will look into it. Thanks! I also love the film adaptations.

@puddleglum I wrote the novel back in the 80s and recently came across the original manuscript in the process of cleaning out my home office. I reread it and decided to update it, because a friend told me how I could get it published. In fact, she helped me do it. I may not sell a single book but at least I can call myself a published novelist. For whatever that's worth.

Every day has it's own history. I find it fascinating to research the dates for interesting facts, but I've skipped quite a few for lack of time. Hopefully, I can catch up as they roll around again.
