Aches and Pains, or Sunshine and Gardens?

Ok, I choose Sunshine & Gardens category. But I gotta say, the aches & pains go with it. It's raining tonight so I have tomorrow off from yard & garden, just in the nick of time, too, I might add. I had planting and sowing planned for today and I got some of it done. I finally put in an asparagus bed, having recently learned that asparagus and tomatoes protect each other from various critters. Since I like them both and have forever wanted an asparagus bed, well.... The thing requires a 6" trench be dug right off the bat. Just doing that took me all morning to accomplish. One bite at a time, it was my elephant to eat. I sat on a stool, but still had to stop every couple of minutes and sit up straight, then dig dig dig, and then stand up and walk around. Off and on, off and on. But I got 'er done. And a couple of other things too. But by two this afternoon, I knew I was finished. How did I know? My body told me. I'll have another chance soon to scatter seeds, and I deserve a couple of days off to recharge the old batteries, so I'm glad of the rain. It was nice enough to hold off until after sunset too, so I got to enjoy some of the sunny day just goofing off. Both my hostas are coming up big guns, and in my scrapings around today I found strong new shoots from a mystery plant, no doubt a bulb I stuck in the ground a couple of years ago or something. I wait with bated breath to discover this new delight. Flora today was complemented with fauna, specifically a new batch of squirrels are getting acquainted with yours truly. They're young things and full of mischief and life, and eating like teenagers. One today even took a taste of my jade plant. I watched to see if s/he'd go for more and sure enough, I had to chase him off it to save the jade. There were tons of bluejays, too. Bold things, they are. A couple perched on the fence behind where I sat. I could see their shadows as they hopped here and there on the fence. One landed in the flowerbed then they both flew off. Ah, nature.

The bluejays are cute birds, there are several "couples" that come to eat from my feeders. We have no squirrels, but most of my neighbors have cats and you know that there is nothing that can stop a cat to come to your garden.

I found some pet and wildlife repellent that does the job quite well. One glitch is that I can't sprinkle it on my car to keep the cats off of it (no garage). One more glitch, it has to be re-applied after rain, which we get lots of. Domestic and feral cats are the biggest killers of birds here. Cats are ok, but not in my yard or especially in my garden where I encourage birds. Plus the cleanup of cat poop is not a favorite task.

@blitzfrick The cats that visit my garden are not feral, they do not poop because they have their "toilets" in their owners houses, but they can make a mess. I keep my bird feeders in safe places, the cats cannot reach them.

@LadyDuck Not all these cats are feral. The owners put them out when they leave in the morning, and maybe again at night. The birds here eat from my feeders, which are in safe spots, but they also scratch around on the ground, like chickens. Pet owners around here don't really seem to care what their pets do in their absence.

You paint a lovely word picture, but I'm never very happy to see squirrels in my garden. They are pests, digging things up etc. I've been digging over my borders today, trying to get rid of weeds, but it's too early to plant anything here yet.

Yes, I understand. I had to take down my bird feeders yesterday, the squirrels had totally destroyed them, trying to get to the goodies. I think @Horse has had problems with squirrels in his garden(s).

You are very lucky to get tons of Bluejays. We are looking if we see one or two in our yards all summer long.

They come in droves, then most fly on. I guess they migrate. James could probably answer that question. I do enjoy them, and all the other little (and big) birds that frequent the neighborhood. The crows are fascinating, but they keep their distance, except when they hop across my roof. I can hear them when I'm inside the trailer.

I need pull weeds so my flowers will grow, but I haven't found a great day to do it.

I don't know where you live, but I bet sunshine will soon find you out in the garden.
