My Red Bud Tree - Cercis Canadensis

United States
April 4, 2016 12:07pm CST
The name Cercis canadensis suggest to me this beautiful tree, blooming in my front yard, should thrive best in Canada. Now I am here in Virginia. It grows well, here, blooming about April 1st, just before the Dogwoods. Yet, I never saw so much as one red bud tree in my home state of New Jersey? Go figure. It is my favorite. Now I'd offer you a beer if you were here and I had one to offer. Since I cannot do that, I will simply say, "This Red Bud's for you!"

They also do well in Kansas and Oklahoma at least in the Eastern half. I got to looking up and Canadensis does not do well out west but there is a mexicanus and several other varieties that do.

I don't know why I never saw one in New Jersey, but I didn't, and I didn't move south until I was 27 years old. Maybe I'm just unobservant.

My favorite tree, we have them all along the roads right now here in Kentucky! I only wish they bloomed longer.
