Do you use public transport when you have the flu?

I was in the local bus yesterday and there was a guy behind me who was breathing a little heavy. At the end of the bus route, he answered a call and said that he was very sick with the flu for 4 days and he was feeling a little better today. The bus ride was around 15 minutes and it was very crowded so I couldn't move a lot. I realised that we in contact and in the same position the whole time. Now I am feeling stressed that I might get the flu as well. I am leaving tomorrow for my weekend trip and I have planned everything and pre paid for the hotel to get a better deal. When I am sick with the flu, I usually stay at home and avoid public transport to reduce the risk of spreading it to everyone. Would you stay at home for your recovery or you do your daily tasks on your recovery day from a bad flu?

He probably had a very bad cold because flu would be a serious condition. It is not uncommon for people suffering from a cold to believe that they have flu.

I assumed it was flu, he said that he was in bed for 4 days with fever. I am not sure about the distinction between cold and flu when I am sick either.

@besweet I would not be easy for someone to recognise the difference at times, but a doctor would certainly consider flu far more serious.

@Asylum I know that some people have to go to the hospital to recover from flu. This guy was young so I think he could have recovered at home, I hope he didn't have something serious.

When sick like that, it is better to stay at home.

I agree, I hope I won't get the flu from him. I was hoping to enjoy this weekend away from home!

I would never go out with the public as I wouldn't want anyone catching anything I had and if I felt that bad I would stay home. Only exception would be to go the doctors.

There should be a law. When I was working we were expected to turn up.sick or not. Then when others began to go down we were blamed for coming in sick!.

@besweet that's very smart of him. when we are sick, the body needs plenty of rest in order to fight the germs and recuperate quickly.

@MsTickle Yes, at least he gives me my sick days away from work! He is probably more concerned about spreding the germs to him but it works for me since I get the time to recover!

Really? It depends on the company's policy, in my workplace I am advised to stay at home. My boss is very sensitive with germs and he doesn't want us spreading them at the office!

I do not use public transport if I have a flu, this is very rude to spread our germs on others.

I also think that it's better to stay away from crowded places until recovery. This is how viruses spread so easily, we should be more careful.

Yes I do because to have a private conveyance is expensive here.

I think it is best to stay at home until full recovery. In addition to the germ spread, it's a huge effort to commute by public transport when I am not feeling well.

I don't like it but if I have to then I do so while trying my best to avoid direct contact with others...all because I don't have a car.

I don't have a car either. Some people use face masks during flu season, I think it's a good solution to avoid spreading the viruses.

I think I would feel stressed if there was someone like that in the bus as well. I will try to stay at home as much as possible if I am sick, as the virus might spread to others. I am not sure, perhaps the boss of the guy didn't allow him to take sick leave anymore, since you said he's been sick for 4 day long. But I know there are some people still go to work when they are sick.

Of course, how else are we going to the doctor if we do not take public transport? Over here, public transportation is the mode for the vast majority of us. Even when we can afford a car, it is often better to travel by public transportation.

Just to put it into perspective, remember that a lot of things you might pick up could come from anywhere. People who seem to have no symptoms of a virus or infection could still be contagious. Every single coin you handle is saturated with more germs and bacteria than a toilet! That stop button you need to press to get off the bus may be contaminated with the germs of a hundred people who have left their nasty disease ridden imprints and those imprinted germs will jump on your fingers, and until you wash or sanitise your hands, they will travel to wherever you touch too. :)
