Al Stewart is a Scottish singer/songwriter known for hits such as "On the Border" and "Time Passages." More importantly, Stewart's 1976 album, Year of the Cat, contained not only "On the Border," but a fantastic, perfect title track.
Stewart hit big with Year of the Cat. The album, produced by Alan Parsons, peaked at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, while "Year of the Cat" was a Top 10 (#8) single on Billboard's Hot 100.
"Year of the Cat" utilizes multiple lead instrument's without sounding busy or out of place. Throw in clever lyrics like "You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre, contemplating a crime" and you have a brilliant tune on your hands.
What's so groovy about it? It's perfect. What's not groovy about perfection?

I drove to St. Louis to see him a couple of years ago, and got to meet him after the show. What was so funny was people were calling out for songs (including "Nostradamus," which is one of my favorites but hardly a song someone can do in concert [it's sort of his art rock song...as "rock" as he ever got that is
]), and he said, "Good. At least you know I'm not Rod."
This is on my 100 favorites list.

The title "Year of the Cat" makes me laugh, because in Japan we talk about being born in the year of the sheep or tiger or whatever. If someone asks you what year you were born and you don't want them to figure out your age, you say "year of the cat (nekodoshi)".

This was definitely a flashback song. I hadn't thought of Year of the Cat in forever.

One of my friends has the album on vinyl. I always make him pull it out when I'm there. Then we listen to it a few times.

He was popular in the 1970's, and is still going strong.
