Cheap Motels, Road Trip and Lots Of Laughs

Canada

My parents were very thrifty and loved to travel. They weren't wealthy when they were young with young kids but they had a huge wander lust. I wrote a story titled 50 Foot Tides. About one of our experiences on this trip with my parents. This is about the other memorable night in an old motel on that same trip. It was a family trip up the east coast of Canada. My brother was in high school, I was in Jr. High and my sister was still in elementary school. We traveled to Maine to visit my father's uncle and aunt. From there we headed to Canada. It was the 1950's. We traveled up the coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches and cliffs we drove by. We ate lobster and seafood, something that was cheap there but expensive at home in New York. We visited woolen mills because my mother was a seamstress and we stop at historic places. We stayed at night in tiny funny motels. They probably cost five dollars a night and back then that was a lot... One memorable place we stayed in looked like a very tiny cottage. There were dozens of them in the motor court. The name Motor Court should have told us how old it was but it was clean so that was all that mattered. Every step in the cottage the floor creaked. There were two double beds and a couch, TV and a bathroom. The walk to the bathroom was like a walk down a hill, the whole cottage listed (leaned) to the back. We laughed every time anyone went to the bathroom because of the uneven walk and because the door didn't close so one needed to take something with them put agains the door to keep it closed. We laughed a lot that night, creaky floors and doors that don't close were really funny to kids. And we all woke up when the train went by, shaking us enough to be bouncing on the beds and laughing until we cried... A night to remember. Here is the link to the other post about that trip called 50 Foot Tides in case you missed it.
My parents loved the Canadian East Coast. We went there on vacations often. One year we had a rental to stay in the Bay Of Fundy in Nova Scotia. It was on a...

My parents were a lot of fun. I still miss them and their sense of adventure and fun. They did teach us how to camp and even like above, the road trips were fantastic...

We stayed in a lot of different motels and cabins as children on our yearly trek from Connecticut to Canada and back. I loved those cabins!!

As a family your travels sound like they were a lot of fun. We used to rent a cabin up in the Muskokas, and although it was rustic, and the floors probably did creak when I think about it, it was home sweet home for one week out of every summer. Those are such precious memories.

@PainsOnSlate Staying at the cottage was cheaper for a family of 6 then staying in a hotel or motel was, and I believe that is how they made the choice. We did stay in a motel once when we visited Niagara Falls, but even then, my mother packed a cooler full of food for us to enjoy in the room so that we didn't "starve' or take them to the poor house ordering too much while we ate out. Economics was always at the forefront of their minds. The funnest part of staying in the Muskokas at the cottage was that my best friend's family also stayed there the week that we went up-her parents were good friends with mine.

No cottage for us but we slept in a tent every summer, that is why I still do it. I would have loved a cottage as a child. I know our memories are something we have forever...I don't think it (a cottage) ever crossed my parents minds. They were both avid campers.

I think back when we traveled back and forth from NJ south there were only small family owned motels along the way.

@PainsOnSlate Back in 'the day' before pet friendly people sneaked their dogs into motels..we had a dog and my fahter waited until dark to take him out - It was dark and he cut across the front area of the motel and both of them feel in the pool! It wasn't funny at the time, but after a while he could laugh about it.

We stayed in a few of the small ones when we went to Florida in the 50's. They were not as memorable as the ones in Canada but and trip is fun when you are a kid. My mother wanted to see here great aunts while they were still alive and have them meet her children. It was an awesome trip. We stayed at their homes so only spent a couple of nights in a "motel" that trip.

That is certainly a good memory to write about the creaky cabin. I haven't heard the term Motor Court in a long time and it brings back some memories for me also.

Those are awesome memories. We traveled to my brothers wedding on PEI, on a tight budget. We have five children and most motels insist that we pay for two rooms. We will book just one and spread kids out on the floor. On the way home we ended up in the room next to the lobby. There was no way we could get all the kids past the desk. Two children accompanied my husband and I into the room. The other three came in through the patio door.

Sounds like an entertaining night. We never stayed in a motel when I was a kid. There were too many of us and little money. When we went on trips, and there were many, we tented it. It didn't take a lot of money to have fun back then.

We camped every summer as a child too. But when the wanderlust hit my parents we would visit family as much as possible and spend a few nights in motels - cheap motels. There were only three of us kids...

Thank goodness I can remember them. While camping with my sister we keep a journal, reading it is fun and we forget so much of the fun things that happened and are grateful we have the journal.
