Mainland Chinese workers complain about lack of overtime work

We have many mainland Chinese workers working in factories in Singapore. In one such factory, I had a chance to talk to many workers from China. I know from the supervisors that many of them visit the casinos on weekends. I ask the Chinese workers why they want to go to the casinos when they know that they will lose money. Their answer is that the company does not have enough overtime work for them. They have nothing better to do on Sunday, and they do not want to stay in the dormitory all the time. They complain that the company should not hire them when work is so little. They want to work 12 hours a day, including weekends and public holiday. After all, all of them have left their loved ones in order to earn more money in Singapore.

@Letranknight2015 sorry to say that Filipinos are not as hardworking as the workers from mainland China. Filipinos enjoy partying more, and they are not likely to want to work 12 hours a day for 365 days a year.

I'm not sure. But my Filipino friends do tend to be interesting in gambling as well.

They complain about not enough overtime hours because they need money so they go to casinos to lose their money. Makes sense.

No, they complain about not enough overtime, because they need the money and the work to keep them away from the casino. They do not mind working 12 hours for 365 days a year.

@scheng1 Yes, they want money but go to casinos. If they cared about their families, they wouldn't blow their money gambling.

@JohnRoberts That is the problem with many foreign workers. Their families are so far away, and they get to see their family probably just once in 2 years. When they live together in a dormitory with all the others, the peer pressure is great. It is hard to say no when all the others are going.

I can understand that people leave their family to work in another city or country because they want to get more money. But they should never go to the casino. It just doesn't make a sense to me. In fact there can be still many things to do in the spare time. Even they can find another part time job if they want. And working all the time is very stressful. They need to have a break sometimes.

@scheng1 Understood. I hope they can learn how to relax when they don't have to work. There is so much fun in Singapore besides gambling.

@youless It is bad influence. When all your friends want to go there, and you are the odd one out, you will feel very lonely.

The problem is that they cannot find another part time job. The employment law in Singapore is very strict. When they are employed to work in a company, they cannot work for another company at the same time. They can go for courses, but these are workers who do not like to study. They like blue-collar jobs with a lot of overtime.

Going to casino just because they have no overtime work? That is not wise. They should rather stay home and rest instead of wasting money.

They are not living with their families. If they have a family with them, they will not go to casinos. They live in dormitory. Imagine 10 of them living in a large room. How likely is it that they want to stay in?

It happens when people have plenty of leisure time they tend to waste in wasteful things. They must search for some part time work then it would be better than to going in casinos and losing money.

They cannot work part time since they are foreign workers on work permit. The government does not allow them to do that. There is really nothing much for them to do unless they want to surf net (which cost money because they have to get prepaid card), watch movie (cost money also), and casino.

@sjvg1976 They are not staying at home. They are staying in a dormitory. A dormitory is usually a large room with 10 beds or more in a room. Think of the hospital ward! The setup is similar. Nobody likes to spend their rest time in a dormitory if they can go to work to earn some money.

But surely Singapore has much more to offer then casinos. So they can go there, have a nice time, enjoy themselves instead of loosing their hard earned money in gambling at casinos.

The problem is peer pressure. Since they live together, work together, they are close to each other. When nearly all of them want to go to the casino, it is hard for one person to say no.

@scheng1 Well, those who want to loose their hard earned money in gambling can go, why force others who would like to save and send the money back home to their families.
