Unfinished Afghan for My Granddaughter

granny square afghan

This afghan was started in October and hoped to have it finished in time for Christmas. Well, as luck would have it, time was not on my side. So, it was decided that this would make a lovely gift for my granddaughter's 1st birthday. As her first birthday is on Friday, and her party on Saturday, I will be finishing the afghan tonight and this weekend. I need to crochet the squares into rows, then crochet the rows together, then crochet a border around the entire afghan. I had put of finishing the afghan for lack of a skein of white yarn. Our local Walmart was completely out of white yarn. Found the yarn today, so, I have no more excuses. Time to finish the afghan. I will post pics in a discussion when the afghan is complete.

I put together 2 rows last night. Had to stop with the 3rd because my eyes were crossing. LOL. Also found that I had put 2 squares together that were too close in color so I had to find another square for it. Too tired to continue so I went to bed.

What a pretty little afghan it will be. DO you think just one skein (no matter how big it is) will be enough to do the sew ins and the edges?

The stitch I use to attach the squares is just a slip stitch. The majority will be used on the border. I should have enough. If not, I guess I will make another trip to Walmart.

@ElusiveButterfly forgive me as it's been awhile since I've even attempted to crochet but a slip stitch is the one where you do not yarn over, correct? You just take one stitch and stitch it to another directly? This is a very pretty afghan and I like the darker squares around the borders.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yes, that is right! I think...lol. I am just a novice when it comes to crochet. I have a difficult time reading a pattern.

That will be gorgeous. I've been doing one for years since I can't remember when. I have another one I'm doing as well and I'm now knitting me a simple poncho - except I spend too much time on my computer.

I am thinking about making some of those great looking crocheted vests for my daughters. They are quite lovely and look simple enough to do even without a pattern.

There are a lot of free patterns out there. I have found quite a few.

@ElusiveButterfly I'd love to make myself a long sleeveless vest. I might find instructions online.

She will only be a year old. However, when I brought over mittens that I made for her she was a happy little camper. She wore them for about 15 minutes! The afghan is twin size so she will grow into it.

@Jessicalynnt my children, well a couple of them, still have the afghans I made for them. I now need to make one for each of the grands.

I used up odds and ends to make most of the squares. I did need to buy more white and a large skein of pink. So all totaled it cost me about $10. I didn't include the yarn I had on hand in that cost. They were left over from other projects, given to me, or purchased at the Goodwill or yard sales for little to nothing.

That is going to look so nice. Afghan rugs are great. Your granddaughter will have her own heirloom once it's finished.

As she grows I will either make more squares to add to it or make her another one that she can select the colors.

@JudyEv when she gets a bit older and can decide on colors I will bring her to the store so she can pick them out for herself.

@ElusiveButterfly I'm sure she'll love this one but maybe she'd prefer other colours.

Shhh, don't tell anyone, but this afghan still isn't put together. Once I started to put it together, I realized that something was missing. Still haven't figured out how to it all together.

Once I get the squares and rows attached, it won't take me long to finish it.
