A computer that is running Windows version XP is still doable.

I know, it's better for us to upgrade. But in fact, this is a good point I think to make is, The external floppy drive is still available. That means the floppy disc is still being made and sold. Computers that have an older operating system are at some advantage to those with newer or in fact the latest operating system on the market, because? The old software you used to be able to run in an older version of Windows is now a piece of trash. It can't be used unless you partition the hard drive and allow for more than one operating system to run. Besides this, most software is being sold per version and when an upgrade comes out, usually about a year or so later, your older version will be useless as the newer and so called improved version of software is supposedly better. Say this to your bank account every year you have to upgrade such applications that cost to replace as newer versions are created along with newer computers and provisions for apps and wireless systems force us to the modern computer challenge. Like most people who stay up on the latest trends of modern technology growing curves, we tend to trash our old computers, printers, scanners, fax machines and many people keep their old collections of gadgets along with old outdated cell phones as nobody will pay for them even for resale to another country as in analog mobile phones, VCR recorders, old electronic typewriters, land line phones, message machines that still use cassettes and even old cassette recorders and reel to reel recorders and 8-track players. The list is long and we all know about this old technology. We all have some old cassettes, LPs and 8-tracks laying around in an old banker's box out in the garage right?

I think they need to make a new rule, but will never will happen. Wait 5 years or least 3 years before they upgrade computers. One the quality of the upgrades would be much better because Microsoft tends to frustrate me with how rushed they always are. Two, just saves people money. Like you said though. Will be great for collectors though.

Ohh I have my old stuff (8 track player, cassette and VCR tapes to name a few). In the last year I finally got rid of my wife's laptop that had Windows XP on it. I did get rid of it, not because Windows XP is no longer supported, but that she started to have problems with her hard drive and her screen well has seen better days. For what she uses a laptop for, we went cheap $275 for the laptop. Yes it runs Windows 10, but it works.

I find no fault with Windows 10. I am adaptable. For that price, you are getting a great deal for a new laptop. Funny most people don't think of laptops the same way they used to. They are kind of like a tablet these days. They are small, compact and easy to carry around using WiFi and being mobile capable. I would imagine laptops will be the new PCs of the following decades.

@lookatdesktop I see desktops staying around for a while. Yes, back in the day (late 80's), people looked at me funny to have a laptop. There are still a lot of CPU intense programs (games, video editing, etc.) that we will keep desktops around for a while. Yes, tablets have a piece of the PC pie and even you can say phones have a piece of the pie that have taken away from computers. My first computer in 1984 was an Apple II E and it had a monochrome (green) monitor and 2 5 1/4 drives. With my dot matrix printer, the price was around $1,500. If you think about that price and the cost of living increases from the 80's to current, plus how much more you are getting with today's PC's, I guess was ripped off in the 80's, lol.

In my opinion Windows XP has been the most reliable Microsoft operating system. I still have one desktop computers with this system installed. I have plenty of programs that I like and I do not intend to throw them only because Microsoft decided not to support Windows XP anymore. I use Windows 8.1 on a laptop.

@lookatdesktop No, the Windows 8.1 sold here does not have the Windows Media Center. I wanted to buy the US version, I checked Amazon, but Microsoft software for the United States cannot be shipped outside the United States.

@LadyDuck , well don't feel so bad. I no longer have Windows Media Center in my windows 10 computer and I have enough things to watch. Besides I can always go into our living room to watch the soaps. lol Since Microsoft dropped their Windows Media Center program with the new upgrade to Windows 10, that is just the way it is at this moment. It was, in my opinion, a good application though and I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Does your Windows 8.1 have Windows Media Center to let you watch broadcast television shows and record them like a DVR does? Windows no longer supports this but the program is still functional in most Windows 8 and 8.1 computers that have the program installed either separately or bundled in the O.S. Windows 10 no longer supports or has this program installed and seems to not plan on bringing it back ever again, as far as I know at the moment but things could change. I really liked Windows Media Center, which is not to be confused with Windows Media Player which still works with most later versions of Windows along with a new one called Movies and TV app.

I liked Windows 98 Second Edition everything after that has been problems. Although my system crashed and I bought a new computer I liked the old systems better they were user friendly.

My XP computer crashed years ago. I loved it. I knew how to use it and had the software I needed. When someone gave me a Windows 7, I found it did not use XP software and I could not even find software online to make my printer work. Then, I heard that XP was no longer supported. It worked. I loved it. Why did they have to kill it?

@lookatdesktop My son says they might come out with XP 2. If they do, I'm getting it no matter what I have to do to get the money.

I think they want us to keep updating so they can continue to make more money. Even so, the improvements are good for all who rely on computers for home or business use.

I think a lot of the new changes being made for computers came with the touch screen function of iphones and other android wireless phones and also tablets and a need to integrate the apps with the applications of computers to allow for easy access across the entire line of devices so they would all be able to use familiar applications for the now broader selections available in media, communications, GPS and other technologies that are used on practically every wireless device as well as basic computers and laptops. Windows 10 brings it all together for everyone to stay on the main curve of change.
