Gurgaon city name change- what is your opinion?

Recently, the Haryana state government changed the name of Gurgaon, which is home to many IT and Non-IT Fortune 500 companies and also home to some great Indian Manufacturing companies and one of the better off Indian cities with an international identity to "Gurugram". Now, the new name is good in itself- meaning the village of the Teacher (Gram-village, Guru-Teacher, and Guru is a commonly used word in Western world too). However, it can impact the brand "Gurgaon". Personally, I do not see why this name has been changed, and I do not think it can get the state government party too much of a political mileage also. So what is your opinion on this name change?

I feel it points to a bigger issue that we face; trying to get mileage from those that have no real benefit to common citizens. What is needed is cooperative effort at nation building - democracy does not mean we cannot agree on anything even on those that require immediate attention. We still have to lift ourselves from the bootstraps for basic needs like food, water, electricity - siva

@Shiva49 and under BJP, when this government came to power in Haryana in 2014, people expected a lot, but seems like this government too keeps on putting its feet into trivial matters rather than devoting time on more urgent issues. I would rather see cities named "ABC" or "XYZ" if that helps people at large.

Yes @Shiva49 when many of our politicos run out of issues to turn people against one another and start fearing loss of their so called "VoteBanks" they devise issues out of nothing. Recently I read about one of the parties in Maharashtra coming to support a female actor who had alleged mental harrassement by certain TV producers(who in turn had told that she was highly unprofessional) saying that a "Marathi" person was being harassed, making it an issue of a Region, whereas that issue was most likely that of attitudinal problem, or work timings/conditions/pay.

Hmm no idea why it was done. there was no need to do that. i think people should spend their money and time on better things to do.

This is yet another cosmetic decision which demagogues take regularly to please a section of people.

I am always against the change of names, in my opinion it's not a good idea.

Just like Bombay was changed to Mumbai, Madras to Chennai, Calcutta to Kolkata, same happened here. The name Gurgaon was a brand for sure, but over a period of time people will get used to Gururgram.

But the funds wasted in such renaming- they could have been used elsewhere, for people who are not even able to fulfill their daily needs!
