How The Mail Service Has Changed

I don't know why popped into my mind that started me thinking about the post office?? Maybe it was something mom said when we were talking this morning... but I can't for the life of me put my finger on it. Anyway, what has changed is that once upon a time, we didn't have to go out and buy a stamp for our letters. I would say that it was in midway through the sixties, but I remember her telling me to rush out to the mailbox with a letter that we wanted posted to her mom! We lived in the country and she didn't have a stamp for the letter, so she gave me seven cents (can you imagine) and told me to lay it on top of the letter. The mailman would collect the letter and the seven cents and I guess he would put a stamp on it. He must have carried some extras in the car, because Nanny always seemed to receive Mom's letters. Now how cool is that?? (I don't think that I added this story to add to the Family Tree)

The old good times when people were helpful. Unfortunately there are no more mailmen like those ones, but now we can buy the stamps online and receive them at our door.

They actually still do this here - if you put money out you can buy stamps. I'm not sure that they will sell you the stamp and put it on the letter though. I have never done this personally. I have also never put outgoing mail in or near my mailbox - although I have heard you can do this as well if you need letters sent out.

That probably wouldn't happen these days. In rural areas, the postman was a major person in the community.
