Many Buddhists who visit Bangkok will make a coffin donation. You can donate about $20 for the poor to buy a coffin to bury their dead loved one. Some Buddhists will tell you that coffin donation is a form of accumulating merits for a better future. It is like sowing a seed of good karmic act. There are some people who do not agree, and they argue that since a person is dead, he does not really need a coffin. The reason is that the grieving family feels the need to give the departed a decent burial. In fact, it is a last human right. Many poor people in Thailand will approach the temples when they need money to buy coffin for their dead loved one. This is where the money from coffin donations comes in helpful. There are many nameless and homeless people in Thailand too. When they die, the temples will try to give them a decent burial as well. They get the money from coffin donation too. That is why many people go year after year to make coffin donations.

Well I guess it's a good way to help those who can't afford to buy one.

I think Philippines should have this charity too. I am sure there are a lot of homeless people, and homeless people will die. Nobody will be there to give them a decent burial.

@scheng1 That's right. Burial is expensive here also.

@LdeL0318 Cremation is cheaper, but then you still have to put the body in the coffin, have a final rite before sending it into the fire.

If people feel it is better to bury the body by coffin, it is OK. At least they feel better. And the coffin donation is also a very kind help. I just have a different opinion to it. If I die, I don't want any ceremony or something like that. I don't want my family to spend money for me since I was already gone. I also don't want them to be so sad. So I really want that my organs donate to the people who are in need. Then my body will be burnt into the ash. I hope my family will take a cruise to Hawaii or other beautiful places and bring my ash and throw it into the ocean. I will feel free and my family shall feel happy since they have a nice cruise. The money wasted on burying my body and making the tomb is a waste and it is not environmental. It is useless in my opinion. I hope my family will remember our happy time.

@scheng1 If so, then having a nice trip and then bury my ash under a big tree. It is my backup plan

I think you have to do some research on ash scattering at sea! You have to get permit to do so, and the cruise liner does not allow anyone to just scatter ash anywhere they like! It is environmentally unfriendly!

That is one way to get the money from coffin donation.

That is very generous of them if that's the reason. :)
