Should my husband get crabs for his birthday?

United States

I got my husband hooked on steamed crabs with Old Bay seasoning many years ago. For 8 years we went to South Carolina where he could crab all he wanted. He really enjoyed catching them, cooking and eating them. But alas, the trip to SC got old and last year we gave it up for trips closer to home. To surprise him for his birthday next month I have been looking into buying cooked hard crabs from Maryland. Right now large male crabs, cooked, are going for $60 a dozen, that seems to be the standard price. Overnight shipping is almost $125. Although I know he would be in 7th heaven if he got a dozen crabs for his birthday, he would probably pass out when he finds out how much they cost! I don't think he'll be getting crabs for his birthday. Photo belongs to me. It was taken in South Carolina a few years ago....Ruby also loves the taste of Old Bay!

Didn't know crabs were that expensive there. We could get a dozen here for only $10. Now i feel so lucky

@toniganzon You're lucky. The east coast gets them starting now - but they get bigger and heavier as time goes on. The southern US has them year round.

Is there a way you can get someone to buy the crabs and bring them over to you? I think some of your friends may go over to catch crabs.

@gudheart It is early in the season plus you are paying for the cooking of them.

Yes, that's expensive. Two summers ago in SC we paid $15 for a half dozen crabs and they were small, very small and light.

I don't mind the price of the crabs it's the one day shipping turning me off - I have another place in mind that is just setting up their Fedex and they will have two-day shipping which should be a little more reasonable.

I had no idea they were that costly and the shipping is outrageous! Maybe you can take him to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner instead! (That is if you have that restaurant near you.) :)

No good seafood places near us. Joe's wouldn't be my pick anyway, read too many complains about that place.

@sgbrown We found a seafood store about 1 /12 hours from us and they get shrimp from SC on a daily basis...we loaded up a year ago and now it's time for another shopping spree.

@AbbyGreenhill I have only been to Joe's once. It was good, but it is about 100 miles from where we live. No good seafood places near us either!

Shipping cost more than the actual crabs. You can get them for him, just dont tell him how much they cost.

The idea was to give him 'good' crabs (I know, that's an oxymoron!)

That is an awful lot of money for the crab. Could you just buy some locally.

We don't have crabs locally, we can't even buy good meat locally!

I also love steamed crabs with Old Bay seasoning, it's a long time that we do not eat them, since our last trip in the United States in 2006. This photo is beautiful, look at Ruby how happy is to lick the crabs!

She loves spicy food and when she smells Old Bay she comes running. Thank goodness it doesn't make her sick.

@AbbyGreenhill It is incredible how dogs develop a taste for a specific food and they become crazy when they smell it.

@LadyDuck Our previous lab liked it also. But one day she got into the bag with the shells, ate them and was pretty sick...so we make sure Ruby doesn't eat any shells...but she loves anything (shrimp, crab, fish) with Old Bay on it.

I should have made the title: I'm giving my husband crabs for his birthday. But that would not have made me sound very good!? You're learning with the tea problem.

@AbbyGreenhill LOL, that's also funny. I have started seeing the page was yours, and sitting the tea down, THEN reading lol

We buy Maine lobsters for much more than that. I don't think it's too costly for a birthday gift. So what will you get him?
• United States
18 Apr 16
Lobsters cost more than crabs to begin with. You are in a much different financial position than we are obviously.

I'm taking him out anyway, this was to be something special. I am actually taking him to Pigeon Forge for a few days.

@Jeanniemaries We're going in May. We try to go twice a year, spring and fall...before or after all the car shows and tourists get there. We used to live a few miles from Dollywood.

Kudos on the hilarious title of your discussion. But seriously, it's a shame they have to be so much.
