Getting rid of "stuff" from a home

My daughter and husband are separating and she is trying to get organized for her move. She has so much stuff that she cannot take with her as she is going from a house to an apartment with her 15 year old son. She is in New Jersey and I am in Florida and I am trying to help her. She works full time and after work is running all over the place with my grandsons lacrosse games and practices. It is not easy these days with all the activities kids have. I told her to list some things on freecycle as that is what I did before our move down south. It is a great way to give away good stuff. I was lucky to have a young couple come for a few things and by the end of the week they came with a big truck and took everything I had. Moving is so stressful by itself and when it is due to a divorce it is more stressful. If anyone knows of any other ways to get rid of things I would be interested.

Other than a garage sale freecycle is a good choice.

@fishtiger58 I can imagine. I was not in a big area so it wasn't that bad. I did get a few people and they took almost everything so I was happy.

@LdeL0318 She works full time and has a 15 year old at home that she has to drive around for sports that he plays after school. It is never easy any more when you are a single parent.

@carebear I hate moving as it really wears me out. Hopefully I will be moving soon too and I am not looking forward to packing things up and moving.

@BethieAnnie I know. When we were cleaning out my dads house they came and refused a lot of things because they were either scratched or not 100% perfect. They did take all the medical equipment he had. I did make so many calls to places and had so many people come to get things.

@BethieAnnie Getting rid of my dads things I had a few different organizations come before I had to pay someone to get the rest. Viet Nam Vets was another one that came and took lots of boxes and small things that one person could lift. I didn't even have to be at the house. I had leave everything on the front lawn with a sign on it that said Vietnam pickup. They left a receipt in the mailbox for a tax deduction. I had them to the house twice and had the front lawn almost totally covered with stuff.

@ramapo17 I had the same experience. We just had a family member die of congestive heart failure. I still have not found a home for everything. They will take some things, but not others. Funny thing is that in different areas they have different rules of what they can take!!!

You say you were lucky to have that couple take all your stuff - they were lucky too, you must have been a godsend to them. Sorry about your daughter, she has all the emotional stuff to deal with as well.

I remember that once I helped my bestie get rid of some stuff in her house. We carried it out to the curb and people were doing U turns in the middle of the street to pick it up.

You could take things to a thrift store or give away some things to friends.

Maybe she could try and sell some of the things on Ebay. I am sorry about her separation, best wishes to her.

I think that's the best way. If she needs money, she could try having a yard/garage sale as well.

Our town has a Garage sale Facebook page. If I were in your daughters situation I could post it all there. I might even try to make a little money off some of the items if I could.
