I want to quit nail biting

Since I was little, I always bit my nails. My parents tried all kinds of stuff including the worst stuff and I still bit my nails. Now I am 31 wanting to quit biting my nails for the millionth time. I really hope I can do it. I try to occupy my mind from my hands like blogging. It helps some. I even bought hard candies like Creme Savors and Jolly Ranchers to help. It is slowly a long process not to do this but I still do it. I even wore gloves when I was young but that didn't work either. I just hope one day I can quit nail biting. Do you bite your nails or used to? If you quit, how did you do it?

@MediciMoor Do you have eyes? Just because we have hands it doesn't follow we should bite our nails, right?

I used to bite my nails since I remember. My parents or uncles, whoever, Used to put some chilli on my hands to prevent me from biting my nails. I continued biting my nails as a teen ager and as an adult. The only way I stopped bitting my nails was when I became a Little independent of the pressures of life. It´s like releiving the stress that places you into a state where you only bite your nails.

I also have bad habit, that I used to cut my hand-finger skin near to nails, whenever I feel hungry or when I feel nervous.

When I was a child I bite my nails and I have been told it was a nervous habit. I did quit because I wanted to paint my nails like the other gals in school did with their long pretty nails. You have to find a reason to want to quit and you will do it. Wouldn't you like to have long pretty nails and paint them a pretty color?

Nail biting seems to be a fairly common problem I have never had the issue because I don't like the sensation of teeth on nails, kind of hard to explain but it makes me feel icky, like bumping your ankle bones together, or running nails down a chalkboard.

When I was young I bit my nails but as I grew older I switched to peeling them off with my other hand, unless some were jagged and then I'd even it out with my teeth. Have you ever carried around a nail file? That might do the trick to help you quit. Whenever you find your fingers heading for your mouth, pull out that nail file and file the offending nail instead. If the nail is fine, just do a little filing to build a different habit, but don't file that nail down too far. I think that's what helped me the most and a desire to paint my nails which won't look good if they are too short and jagged. Possibly buy yourself some new fingernail polish if you've not done that in a while. Another idea might be to put a coin in a jar each time you refrain from biting any nail. When you have enough you can buy a treat for yourself. But you'd want to come up with an amount first or you'll reach too small of an amount too soon and it may not do any good. The amount you put in the jar each time could be something like a nickel or dime. While I've never had acrylic nails, maybe getting your nails done that way would help too as you can't bite those nails and it hurts when you try to tear them off.
