My Underground Exploration

It’s about 12 years since this photo of me was taken deep underground. My friends and I got a rare opportunity to take a guided tour of a genuine Roman copper mine at Alderley Edge, in Cheshire. It was dark of course without helmet lights, but surprisingly hot.
Some of the tunnels were narrow and very muddy, especially for wriggling through like worms. There was also a nerve wracking climb up a very high iron runged ladder. Our guides put safety harness on most of the group but my weight led them to advise me that if I fell they might not be able to hold me, so I climbed the whole hundred and fifty feet without a safety rope. Not for anyone both claustrophobic and afraid of heights.
I have read a fantasy novel by Alan Garner called The Weirdstone Of Brisingham which features children trapped in the mine by evil elves – having been there, I see where Garner got his inspiration, but it was a truly fascinating place – all the more so given that it was first mined by the Romans over 1,000 years ago.

@JudyEv it looks impressive though it is quite poisonous so we had to be careful not to touch it

@arthurchappell We were warned not to touch the colouring too. There was also some brown pigment showing as well as the blue.

I wonder why it was that hot? That sounds like a both fun and terrifying trip.

@Jessicalynnt I was surprised but I expect heat just has nowhere to go

@Jessicalynnt until you get really deep but going to the earth's core was a bit over-ambitious for us

@norcal yes we were there for just a few hours - a gruelling work day there would be unimaginably arduous

Were there any traces of copper left? At least the Daleks didn't get you.

@Ronrybs there are big caves and mines like Wookey Hole and the Blue John Mines but this is basically a mine shaft so lots of narrow crawl spaces to go through, often muddy and wet too - it bordered on pot-holing

We have Cave of the Winds here in Manitou. I've lived in Colorado over 30 years, and only been there once, even though they have three caves.
