My paypal account got hacked

I requested the $10 to paypal I earned from Opinion Outpost. It would not allow me to get the payment as it said I was not verified. I know I am verified so I logged into paypal to see what was wrong. I saw on April 4, 2016 3 transactions I did not make. One was for $100 to Walmart, another was $75 to MAC Cosmetics and another for $15 to Macys. I had such a hard time getting a hold of paypal to sort this out. I was in tears by the end of this. I got my email updated, password and security questions changed and the money that was taken out of my account is in the process of being refunded. What a mess! I am so stressed out. It was only a month ago that someone stole money out of my checking account and now this :( This one said someone logged in and made the transactions from Asburn VA. Again another state I have never been to.

Itis pathetic that these people do such things and we are made to suffer. I have had my worst experiences with Paypal Customer Support... it was so very bad and insane. I hope that you have got things recovered and their support was good. Though no password is secure enough, please also ensure that you have the right and good Antivirus on your computer and also, you have no malware installed.

They took care of the problem right away. I was so happy. What was your experience with them? What happened I mean?

@thesids Oh wow that is a huge hassle by the sounds of it. I do actually know why #4 makes sense. I used to sell things on ebay and so money that I earned would go into my paypal account. I could use that money to buy things on ebay without having to send it to my bank account. I didn't have to have a bank account connected that way unless I wanted to send the money from paypal to my bank to draw the money out as cash.

@shaggin The Indian Paypal Support is worst. You ask them something and they come up with completely insane responses. My account was hacked, invoices worth 1000 USD were sent to 7 persons (all unknown to me) and then they deleted the account after changing all my info on the account. That is what the Customer Support had to say when I asked what happened to my account and why I was unable to log in. Problems started when I asked them if I could reactivate that account - because it is time of Filing in my taxes and I do need my statement from Paypal. And they replied back explaining me how to send an Invoice, how to attend to disputes. I opened up a new Account after two weeks, and now they will not allow me to access my balance in it. They said they are doing it for security reasons and customer satisfaction. Finally after a few chats and emails, it got clear that Indian Paypal needs every new account to comply with 3 things - 1. You cannot withdraw amount for 21 days and this is in effect for first 10 transactions or 2 months whichever is earlier 2. You should not be involved in any "Refund from the client" thing 3. You should at least be 60 days old to withdraw to the bank 4. You cannot buy anything unless you link your bank account or your Credit Card on another page It is ridiculous because - read conditions 1 and 3 - and similarly, you do need to set up and link your bank if you want your money (it is mandatory in India) so why do they have #4. And neither their support nor anyone else could help me out. Now I have to wait for another 45 days before I get my money and right now, I am in more need of money than before as I had planned up and set up my appointments with the doctors on assumption that I will have all my balance within the normal 7-10 working days in the bank.

I really don't think my password is easy to guess at all. I can't even imagine how they figured it out. A friend recommended that I not do any online banking etc from this old computer so maybe that is how they got my information through a security issue with this old outdated computer.

I'm sorry to hear about this. This happened to me once as well. I got in touch with them, and thankfully they refunded me for the purchases I did not make.

Sorry this had to happen to you. Now I understand why I don't feel like saving my earnings in paypal and just transferred it to my bank. better change your password and make it more complicated.

Because my bank account was connected to paypal they can actually over draw from paypal and it would take the money right out of my bank account. Its a pretty scary problem.

It's really frightening how often things like this happen. There just seems to be no stopping the thieves out there. I'm glad you've managed to get everything sorted out.

It is crazy how common it has become. It is very sad to me that this is so common. It is so wrong of people to steal this way.

An ominous reminder of online crime. You must have been frazzled and frustrated at this invasion.

I really was frazzled and frustrated by this. I started to cry. My kids had just come home from school but I needed to get it taken care of so I told them to just go play for awhile until I got it all done and that I would help them with their homework when I got off the phone. Thankfully it was only about a half hour or an hour from start to finish to get it all taken care of.

I have been on paypal for about 11 years or more and I have never had an issue with a hacker until now. I think it has something to do with the fact that a month before that my bank account got hacked. I think they were able to trace my information somehow. Hopefully I will never have to worry about this again.

I had my Amazon account hacked last year the person was able to get the e-gift card I had sent to my daughter resent to him and used. I called Amazon over a 2 month period of time to get it refunded and each time they would open a ticket, I finally gave up. No more e-cards for me. I hope you get your money back and it doesn't happen again.

@shaggin, I thought the same thing. I was very disappointed in the customer service, while everyone was nice, no one could help and never got it resolved. I gave up, trying to explain everything over and over was frustrating. I was most upset because I notified them that my account had been hacked one day and the next was when the e-card was stolen. Amazon is such a huge company that customer service should have been much better. I even have a strong password so how someone was able to get into it and change the username and the password is beyond me. It took over a week to get my account back up and I had to call into customer service and they had to walk me through. I hope that your account stays safe.

@beaniefanatic13 Wow that makes me much more leery of Amazon now. I am sorry to hear you had all these issues with them. I hope I never have this kind of problem. I would be a wreck. I don't handle problems that arise very well. I break down in tears. I think if I went through what you did that they would lose me as a customer.

Oh wow that is very upsetting to hear that Amazon was of such little help! I shop on Amazon all the time. I have quite a bi of gift card codes accumulated in my account from crowdtap mostly. I would be very upset if I lost out on that. I would have expected Amazon to have better policies to refund money that is stolen.

No things like this as far as I know never get reported to the police by us. I contacted paypal and I assume they contact the police to try and find out who did this. I know that they have things investigated.

Something similar happened to me with my account on Clixsese. My account was taken by someone, who sent the money I had earned to his paypal account. Now I´m waiting for the refund, since they told me they were going to talk to paypal. It´s a problem that is becoming common, I guess.

It has been years since I was on Clixsense. I believe the reason I quit there was because there was so many pop ups with viruses that kept messing up my computer.

@shaggin I´m still happy working on Clixense. It´s just this issue that brought my down; for the rest, I could be in Clixsense for long.

I did contact them and they took care of it promptly. I was very happy. It was however hard to get through to a live person to speak to that was the most exhausting part.

No I didn't actually purchase the items the hacker did so I did not have to pay for them. They cancelled the one order so it wouldn't go through and refunded me the other. I am so glad it is all over with. I really hope it doesn't happen again. That is awful that you had to deal with a hacker for months. I would be so upset I cannot even imagine.

That's why companies are installing more security features for their customers. It's so sad but working with Paypal is a win because they will make sure that things are resolved.

Yes they did resolve things quickly so I was really happy about that. It was pretty hard to report the issue and talk to someone on the phone. I had a hard time getting to talk to a human that was the most frustrating thing. Once I did get in touch with someone though things were sorted out really fast. I am very thankful!
