In All Kinds of Weather...

It's funny how life works. For the past month, we have had zero rain in our area (April is one of our driest months). Then, on a day when some amazing and important things are taking place in our community, the skies decide to open up on us! And not just a passing shower, but the kind of storms that build up out of nowhere, and just sit over the top of you and build up into monstrous thunderstorms! That's what happened last night. And two important events happening in our community (one of which was one of my events) yesterday was the grand opening of our busiest municipal swimming pool, and the first of three days of graduation ceremonies for the University of Florida. The storms started building around 5:30-6:00pm, so it didn't affect the pool's grand opening very much (the pool closes at 7pm, so most patrons had already left for the day), but it did affect the graduation ceremonies for UF. Typically, UF holds graduation inside its basketball arena, but that facility is under renovation for the next year, so the graduation ceremonies were moved outdoors to the football stadium (those are the only two facilities in the community large enough to hold such large graduation ceremonies). And naturally, because the ceremony was moved to an outdoor setting at the football stadium, two things occurred: 1) the temperature soared into the 90's, and 2) our month-long drought ended with a deluge of rain. I felt bad for all the graduating students from the University of Florida who were part of last night's ceremony. Graduation from a university is a major accomplishment, and so the ceremony is something that is considered special. To get rained on sort of ruins that magical moment. There is a crowd-favorite football song that is sung at the start of the fourth quarter of every UF football game, called "We are the Boys of Old Florida." In one verse of the song, there are the following lyrics: "...in all kinds of weather, we'll all stick together..." The crowd at the stadium burst out in an impromptu singing of "We are the Boys" when the ceremony was delayed due to lightning and rain. When the lightning subsided, the president of the university took the podium and said, "We are Gators...In all kinds of weather we all stick together!" The crowd went wild, and the ceremony took place even with the downpour. It may not have been the most special ceremony due to the weather, but I guarantee it was a memorable one! Graduation ceremonies continue again today and tomorrow, and you guessed it...more rain is in the forecast! Keep your fingers crossed that the remaining graduation ceremonies go off without a hitch. Have you ever experienced a time when it has rained on your parade?

My high school graduation was set to be held outdoors. The threat of rain loomed overhead. It rained that morning. The sun came out in the afternoon making it hot and humid. Our ceremony was held outside, despite the forecast calling for evening showers. An hour after the ceremony, it poured.

@moffittjc it would have been unbearably hot and stifling if they had to have it in our school gym. I remember working at the high school and having graduation indoors. OMG it was horrible. I couldn't stay in the gym. Had to go outside for fresh air.

@ElusiveButterfly Our gym was air conditioned and always freezing cold inside (it had to be...it's Florida); unfortunately, with a graduating class of over 800 seniors, our school just couldn't fit everybody into the gym!

My high school graduation was outside too! I remember how hot it was during the ceremony, but at least it didn't rain on us!

I'm surprised they still had the graduation ceremonies, but as the saying goes "the show must go on!" It sounds like it was a memorable moment for all the graduates! Congratulations to all of them! :)

@pinkCardigangirl You should walk! Then you'll have something to talk about in the future (and something to write about on myLot)!

Hopefully, this will be the only time the graduation ceremonies were held outdoors, as the renovations to the basketball arena should be completed before the fall graduation ceremony rolls around. The indoor arena is where graduation ceremonies are typically held.

@moffittjc That's nice. We usually have graduations on the field. Last year I had my graduation in the parking lot because they were fixing the field. This year it's back on the field. Maybe I should walk, so I have an experience in both. lol

If it rains sufficiently you will not need a swimming pool.

It only rains that much during hurricanes! Our typically afternoon rains consist mainly of thunderstorms that build up out of nowhere, dump their fury on us, and then disappear as quickly as they arrived. There's an old saying in Florida: if you don't like the weather, just wait 20 minutes!

@Asylum With all that rain you get, you don't really seem to have a choice!

Here in Oregon, you can almost plan on rain for whatever parade you have planned. If it does not rain, you are lucky.

I live right around the corner from Florida Tech and they had their graduation last week too. It was the day after the big rain storm and I commented to my husband how lucky those kids were it wasn't scheduled the day before.

Did Florida Tech hold their graduation outdoors somewhere? I guess even if it was indoors, nobody wants to have it rain on graduation day!

@moffittjc I don't know I just saw the article that they had it but didn't read the whole thing. I'll remember to check that out next year.

Everyone will have something to remember their years of university life, even if it's the conclusion of it all. With the temps so high it might have felt good. I hope it doesn't rain today or tomorrow for the University. I'm glad the pool was about to close when the heaven's opened up.

All commencement ceremonies went off without a hitch today and this evening! The thunderstorms didn't roll in until about 9pm tonight! Only one more day of graduation ceremonies, and the ones scheduled for tomorrow are all in the morning and early afternoon!

@just4him Another hot one on tap today, with highs in the mid-90s, which means the afternoon thunderstorms will develop all over the place. Being located right in the middle of the state, we're ground zero from when the west coast sea breeze and the east coast sea breeze collide, causing massive build-up of storms! That's our typical summer pattern, so we're not used to seeing it like this so early in the year.

It's getting ready to storm here too! UF was able to get the morning and afternoon graduation ceremonies in without incident, now it will be the roll of the dice to see if they get the evening graduation in tonight without the rain hitting them

It's funny how--depending on the climate--we are either begging for it to rain, or begging for it to stop. I'm pretty sure the folks in Seattle would love to send you their rain! lol

What a shame but what a great reaction too. It will certainly live on in the memories of those graduating.

I'm proud of the university officials who refused to cancel the ceremonies, and for all the students for refusing to let the rain hinder their graduation!
