Today is May 1...May Day! A day of celebration for the working class...

April 30, 2016 9:43pm CST
Today is May 1st. It is celebrated as International workers day all over the world. It is celebrated to honor the "Haymarket affair" demonstrations and protests which took place in Chicago in 1886. On that day there was a huge demonstration in support of 8 hour work shifts. In India there is not much fuss about it at present. But anyways we get a holiday to relax and have fun. How is it celebrated in your place?Do you take part in it?

Do you get holiday atleast?...I feel in US there is already enough awareness about labor rights. But in developing countries like India it is yet to fully occur.

We do need those rallies, demonstrations and peaceful protests. Our priorities and needs as laborers change with time. And employers have to fulfill those needs.

There are lots of job fairs in malls today as part of the celebration. Of course those on the left side of the political spectrum will surely have their protest rallies to raise their voices against contractualization and other unfair labor laws.

It is good to have job fairs. Many will find new jobs. We need more security and comforts for the labor class.

There is no official day off here, but it is a Pagan holiday for us. Hubby has to work tomorrow and all the rest of the week, so I suspect we will just make a nice meal.

I feel a holiday has to be declared everywhere. Atleast 1 day in a month workers need a day to re-organize themselves and ask for their rights. Our needs and priorities change every year.
