Photo Study - Car Park Shrine – Preston

photo taken by me - the Preston Car Park Shrine
Preston, England

Though not remotely religious, I love looking at churches, with their art, statues and architecture. The remains of this church, Saint Mary’s in Preston, England, built in 1605 when James 1st was in office, took me totally by surprise though for this shrine statue is all they left up of it when it was demolished in 1990 to make way for a car park. The statue is left out in a sea of cars, a relic of a building torn away round mother and child, trapping them in the commercial world that took priority and exposed them to the elements. It seems rather sad and out of place, like using the Mona Lisa to prop up a wonky coffee table. Arthur Chappell

It's also very unfortunate that the 6.9 magnitude quake destroyed and wiped out many of the centuries-old beautiful churches in Bohol, Philippines about 3 or 4 years ago.

@arthurchappell Yes, and it's difficult, if not impossible, to restore them :)

It's beautiful. Is that a gate so people can go inside and leave those flowers? I do agree with you. It would be out of place in this modern world in a modern setting.

@just4him The gate was locked when I saw it but they must tend to it well anyhow - the flowers look quite fresh

Only a handful of people use an old church building compared to thousands who will benefit from a car park Isnt it sad?

I agree love me a good life sermon and the prettiness of most churches. The religion part I could careless about but happy for people if it helps make their life more fulfilled.

Nice photo. Over here they would've torn that down as well.

I am interesting in churches' architecture also. I enjoy you showing us some of these things because I for one will probably never make it over there.

It is quite beautiful, I am glad they decided not to pull it down.

That is unusual, first to tear down the church for a carp park and secondly to leave the shrine there!

@sunrisefan not changed the photo - same one - it wouldn't load first time as too big so I shrank it - possible you got a glimpse of the bigger version but I didn't think it went out at all

@arthurchappell So that's it :) I was really thinking this was not the photo I saw the first time I visited your Discussion :) I'll be out in a while to attend a party and may not be able to answer further comments later :)
