Both US and Singapore have the highest rate of diabetes compared to the rest of the world.
While China and India have the largest number of diabetic patients, the rate is still low because of their large population.
Personally I think eating rich food, and sedentary lifestyle, are both to blame for the high rate of diabetes.
I cannot comment on the lifestyle in US, but I know that in Singapore, most people sit too long, and they like sugary beverages, such as bubble tea.
Another reason is that rice is a stable diet, and rice converts to sugar.
That is nearly as bad as drinking sweet beverage.
On top of that, working 10 to 12 hours in the office is not going to help matter.
New data from the International Diabetes Federation shows the US has the highest diabetes rates among developing countries, with almost 11 per cent of the population battling the condition.

@scheng1 yes, but isn't it that Americans are nor fond of eating rice, but they nibble on sweets and cakes? that may be a problem that is why their state is considered on the top in having diabetes to the citizens.

@ridingbet They are big on fast food, and fast food contains a lot of sugar and fats.
I think most of them will order soft drinks to go with fast food.
Perhaps they are not exercising enough too.

Fermented food, like sauerkraut, can help balance our gut bacteria so that we have less sugar cravings.. And better avoid all white sugar, flour and rice..

I think lifestyle is another reason for the high diabetes rate in our country.
Most of us do not drive, but public transportation is so well-connected, and there is a bus stop near our place.
There is no need to walk much unless we want to save some money on transportation.
I think the lack of exercise plus the availability of good food at low price combined to get the diabetes rate up.

@allknowing i do not really like the Japanese green tea.
I like the Chinese green tea, especially when the leaves are opening up in hot water.

You can be born with a low blood sugar count, or being born not being able to breakdown sugar properly in your body.
Not having strong or healthy kidneys can cause problems breaking down insulin, thus causing diabetes. Main point you can have diabetes anytime.

If other countries have 5% diabetic patients in the country, and US and Singapore have more than 10%, something is wrong.
That is especially so when the increases occur over the decades.
It is impossible that those born in US and Singapore are born with inability to breakdown sugar, while those born in neighboring countries are born with ability to break down sugar.

@davidalicea100 The majority are not born that way.
Most do not get diabetes until they are in their 40s or more, and they know that they are lazy to exercise, and they eat too much starchy, fatty and oily food.
Work stress has to do a part too, but nobody can explain 10% diabetes in a country by saying that most people are born like this.

@scheng1 It is possible to be born like that some people are born with lower blood sugars than others, some people are born with a insulin spike, some not and some get it later in life.
It is the opposite of being Hypoglycemic.

In the United States they do not eat rice, but too rich food, sodas, fried food, fats and of course they sit in their cars, their offices, in front of TV, in front of the computer... exercising two hours a week is worth nothing, the important is to move every day.

They certainly do not exercise as much as the Swiss.
The weather in Switzerland is so good that everyone tends to go outdoor when they are free.
The humidity and heat in Singapore means most people prefer to stay indoor, and they will eat when they feel like eating, not necessary when they are hungry.

In fact the real reason to cause having the diabetes is not found yet. Of course it has a relation with the diet and exercises. I can understand why Americans have more diabetic patients because some of them are very fat. Whereas in Europe you don't often see such fat people. As to Singapore, I don't know why it has the highest rate of diabetes. We can't blame rice because many races regard the rice as the main food, such as Japanese. But Japanese have long lives. Actually many food will turn to sugar at last, such as the potatoes, fruits and so on.
