10 items or less Fast Lane Check Out.. Me: *Counting the items in my cart*

Even though we just went grocery shopping last night, I went again but to Trader Joes since it was closer. We realized we were short on a few items...
It wasn't too busy for a Monday afternoon but there were a few lines. There was a fast lane check out but it says 10 items or less. I counted and I had like 17 items so I stood in the lane that didn't have a limit. My items were single small items like a lime, a tomato, an avocado, a onion.... & etc.
The cashier I was standing in line told me to go to the Express lane. I asked him, even though I have a little more. He said, yes! I went to the Express lane (no one was behind me at the time) and I told her, the man told me to go over here. She said that's fine... As she was ringing me up, the lady who just stood behind me was sighing. She even switched lanes.. I ended up finishing faster than the lane she jumped to.
Are you someone who counts their items if you go to the fast lane check out? I do, and usually I do not want to go in the lane but if I am over by a little like one or two, I will. I get annoyed if someone has a cart full and goes to the fast lane for check out when it's busy! If it isn't busy - then I wouldn't mind.

I always count. I was a cashier at an Air Force commissary. I was fast, so I worked the cash only express lane a lot. I always called big orders over if I wasn't busy.

I think if you have a few over they are normally ok with that.

@kevin1877uk I don't dare lol! I hardly use carts though too. I don't usually buy often at one time.

Yup they don't mention anything unless you have a cart full. I wouldn't dare go in the line if it's a cart full unless they tell me too! I get annoyed if the person knows theirs the limit but just goes anyway. The check out lanes counter is usually smaller too (without the conveyor belt)..

Some stores will have you go to the fast lane even if it is busy, just to get things flowing again.
As for the single produce, it's all in how fast the cashier can put in the plu codes really. You may have had 7 more items, but those seven didn't take to much longer.

Yes! I know what you mean. I personally always grab the ones with the sku # so it's faster for the cashier and faster for me too.
I would hate to grab items without sku # then at the cashier - they have to look at the book if they can't find it fast enough or don't remember the numbers, and have to ask someone (slows it down).

@infatuatedbby When I worked up front, we had a spinny wheel thing that showed the PLU's. However, if we forgot one or didn't know one we'd just ask the cashier around us. It was always faster that way.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes it is faster! I see a huge list of the sku# in front but it's a big book! So I just grab ones with the sku#

We ever buy less than 50 items, so I don't have to ever get in the 'fast' lane.

@infatuatedbby 50 items isn't much - they put the faster checkers on the big item lanes. LOL

@infatuatedbby I don't know that I've ever done that! Except during a softball tournament.

@TheHorse I need to not go to the market when I'm hungry. I add extras that I really shouldn't..

If I am bored I might. There are always people who will push the envelope if possible. If the cashiers put up with this then it probably won't stop happening.

It wasn't your fault... and it wasn't the sighing lady luck either...
Yeah, I count my items, even if I have multiple items like 2 bars of the same exact soap, for example, I'd still count them as two items.
These days I'd go to self check out line if I only have few easy items though.

He-he. Yes, not the lady's luck but it didn't take too long!
I do count every item too but if it's like bananas it's one.
