HB2, The Lawsuits, And My Son

Let me begin by saying I think HB2 was a terribly executed bill, and horrible law, written in haste and a knee-jerk reaction to Charlotte passing an ordinance that, under state law, it had no authority to pass. Further, the potty law part of HB2 was, in fact, a red herring, used to distract attention away from the fact that the law outlawed local municipalities from enforcing a minimum wage higher than the state minimum wage, among many other provisions that are getting no attention at all. Now the Federal government has decided that the best way to get North Carolina not to enforce HB2 is by threatening the educational well-being of our children. If the Fed doesn't get its way, they are going to cut off Federal funds for higher education in North Carolina. If they do, it might mean that my son, who will be a junior at NC State next year, may not be able to continue his education, along with thousands of other college students. I hardly think this is fair to the students. They didn't pass HB2, yet the Federal government is willing to hold hostage the education and future of tens of thousands of students, who have done nothing wrong, on behalf of a group of people who probably number less than 3,000 state wide. Granted the intersex and transgendered should not be discriminated against. It is not their fault their is a fault in their genes. But neither should my son and others like him stand to forfeit their futures on behalf of those suffering from the genetic mutation that makes them what they are. Do you think the Federal Government is right to use school funding to blackmail the NC State Legislature and Governor into repealing or at least refusing to enforce HB2?

As far as I know, there is no evidence that being transgender is a result of a genetic mutation.

Actually, if you do the research, there is a lot of evidence that the truly transgendered are so because of a genetic anomaly occurring during development when either too much estrogen or testosterone was present in the amniotic fluid during brain development. The research is ongoing, but clearly something somewhere is not typical or there would be no confusion between gender equipment and gender identity. I don't believe those who are transgender are so because they chose to be so. The evidence is much more obvious for the intersex individuals. Studies show their XX or XY chromosomes are abnormal, resulting in the development of the genitals of both genders.

@DWDavis oh I don't believe that people choose to be transgender. I just said that I hadn't heard of there being any evidence of it being the result of it being a genetic mutation. I also freely admit that I don't keep up on the research on these things.

@NJChicaa Sorry, I didn't mean to come off harsh. The ongoing research is pointing more and more at biological and genetic markers among those who have been identified as transgender. Where conventional wisdom in the medical community used to be that it was a psychiatric ailment, modern medicine, especially genetic medicine, is identifying the unique genetic characteristics many transgender share.

I have no idea what this post is about, and I'm trying to fathom how the legalities of transgender folk using the public toilet they feel most comfortable in ties in with higher education?! Call me thick, or British!

You're not thick. In order to punish the NC legislature and governor for passing a law discriminating against transgender and intersex people, the Federal government is threatening to cut off all Federal aid to North Carolina's universities, forcing thousands of college students out of school.

The only good news out of this so far is that the fed cannot shut off the funds while the case is in litigation and it may stay in litigation for years.

The left and Obama are all exercised about the LGBT feeling comfortable about where they pee but don't seem to care at all how the normal men women feel about the issue.

No. And by keeping people ignorant might be the only way they get by with their mindless tactics because dumb ignorant people don't know when they're being manipulated.

This entire thing is a ridiculous mess. In my opinion, one should use the bathroom that matches their parts, no matter what they are wearing! Grrrrrr. I hope your son and thousands of others can complete their education in peace.

The funding is safe for now, and will be as long as the issue is stuck in the courts. It is bizarre that with all the challenges we face in the world, potty rights are taking center stage with the American press and politicians. I think they are trying to distract us from the real dangers we face.

My whole thing with this and laws like it is all it does is create divide. They say we work for everyone no matter if they voted donated and all that other nonsense that it really comes down to. They say they want a unified country but these are the people that divide it the most. Help people more if they voted for you, that is fine. At least do no harm to the people that did not vote because they think differently. Tired of knee jerk retractions and the paranoid country we have become. I get people who are trying to sabotage, but these people take it out out on the ones who also say my viewpoint lost and will try to work with them still even though I do not agree with what they are selling.
