I have this thing about WW2 and the 1940's, I love the history of the time and also the fashions of the era. I collect bits and bobs from the 1940's and where I can, I go to 40's themed events.
Yesterday, I was given an Anderson shelter - a full on full size proper air raid shelter that was used in the blitz. Oh wow, I thought. . . a real bit of history! Now these things arn't small - 10ft by 8ft by 6 ft high and need to be buried and covered with top soil.
The really amazing thing is that the wife has agreed that I can dig up a patch of the back garden and bury this air raid shelter!
At last! I can have my very own emergency air raid shelter - you never know when you might hear the three minute warning!!! Even if I never use it as an air raid shelter - I will turn it into a man cave!

@jaboUK Oh no - that was quite a bit before my time but growing up in the 70's, I can see a big difference between then and now - and listening to stories of parents and grand parents . . .
Everyone seems so self absorbed in their own gadgets and gizmo's to worry about anyone else.

We have a so called "atomic shelter" inside the house, in the basement. It was mandatory here in Switzerland to have one. Now you can ask not to built it in your house, but you have to pay a tax for a place in a public shelter... just in case.

The man cave is a good idea although your wife may want to lock you in it if you have any more plans for her garden. As some historic old biddy who has actually experienced being taken into an air raid shelter in the garden in the middle of the night, perhaps you would like to know that they need to smell of damp distemper and oil. For this you need to distemper something in there and have an old fashioned smelly oil fire to keep it warm. Best of luck.

Wow, that is wonderful and I don't know what your climate is like, but wouldn't these protect you if a tornado hit? Some people have basements, but I would love to have an underground bunker.

I wanted one of those all those years living in Kansas, famous enough for tornados. It is cool you found one from the 40's
