What a busy week we've had

What a busy week we've had! We have been away for most of it but I'll tell you all about it over the next few posts. Last Wednesday a friend arrived from Perth and next day we all went to Narrogin (Western Australia) to take my Mum and Dad's headstone back after having had Mum's details put on it. Our friend, Lynn, was able to visit her mother in the nursing home. Although the headstone was very heavy, we were able to back the trailer right up to where we needed it and the tombstone was put in place relatively easily. We manhandled it off the back of the trailer, tilted it up and held it while the car was driven forward out the way then dropped it almost exactly where it needed to be. We stayed the night with my sister and the four of us came back to Donnybrook next morning. Now I'm off to read and catch up on notifications. There seems to be dozens of the latter. Have a great day everyone. Next episode – next post!

That looks a lovely tombstone, well worth the effort of getting it there. Look forward to more of your tales.

@JudyEv That seems unnecessarily complicated. Surely there are workemen capable of doing it in Australia.

@jaboUK You'd reckon so wouldn't you? That's what the stone mason told Vince so I presume it's right.

It's not all that flash but they are just so expensive. The granite comes from Western Australia but is shipped in big blocks to China to be cut and polished then shipped back again. Heaven knows why it can't all be done here.

We had thought it through thoroughly and were very careful. It weighed 230 kgs so we couldn't afford to let it fall on our toe or whatever.

I am glad that things went well and that stone was pretty easily placed, @JudyEv.

Thanks. We tilted it on the trailer and put small pieces of steel pipe under it. This allowed us to roll it to the back of the trailer. My brother and sister helped but they're 77 (twins) and my brother is totally blind so we had to be careful not to endanger him. All's well that ends well.

Do your notifications come on email too? I had 64 emails waiting but some only had one or two notifications on them.

I have a question for you, why didn't a stone carver come to the cemetery and make the addition to the stone there? That is what is done here. I was the sexton of the cemetery for years and no one ever removed a stone to add information!! Seems like a lot of work and with the danger of damaging the stone seems a little risky. It is beautiful and I know how much it means to have this there to commemorate your parents.

@JudyEv lol Probably not since at least here the cemetery doesn't own and isn't responsible for your stone, you are so if it is gone, oh well, your problem. Now it may be different where you are and here the stone cutters most definitely do wonderful work on site at the cemetery.

For some reason they couldn't do the lettering on site. I guess there is no power and it's hard to do when it is standing vertically. And they wanted a small fortune to take it to their workshop 100 miles away and return it themselves so we decided we could manage. The Shire wanted to charge us for removing it but in the end Vince and the lady he spoke to decided they didn't know each other's names and if we spirited it away and brought it back no-one would be any the wiser! I don't know if we have a sexton at the cemetery but if so, they would have been very worried to have a headstone suddenly disappear.

They did a very good job on the engraving, sometimes its hard to get newer inscriptions to match up with older ones.

@JudyEv That is good, we had to have some engraving redone on our big family marker. Over the decades the look of actual fonts changed greatly. They were able to redo it and at that time they had the remaining members names added, and as they passed away they were able to match the years and next week the last year will be added to that very big old stone.

It was a different company too. I guess if you keep things simple it is easier to match fonts, etc.

@Juliaacv It would be really special to have a family marker in this way. Our relatives are mostly spread around but in the same cemetery.

glad that went well, with noone getting a stone dropped on their feet! I decided I dont want buried, or a stone, I want to be cremated and my ashes scattered under a tree sapling somewhere

We will be cremated and scattered somewhere. Or maybe buried as ashes under a rose bush in the cemetery gardens.

Wonderful you were able to get that done and back in place. I notice no grass I guess that's normal for your area or at least the cemetery.

@fishtiger58 There are gardens round the homes and lots of trees but no water to spare for a large cemetery.

Narrogin doesn't have a lot of water to spare and the area is gravel and clay so they don't even try to grass it.

@JudyEv I live in the midwest United States we have grass and green trees everywhere. I once visited Phoenix Arizona and it's all desert. I couldn't get used to the sight of no grass or green leafed trees. Very strange to me.

Your parents' headstone looks neat and lovely. I would like to share something about the headstones in my country. Usually, they are big and magnificent, containing information from the decedents' descendants and their partners to their own, including their main life stories and life span. In recent years, a new form of tombstone—QR memories—have appeared in someplace of the country. Just take out you mobile phone and scan the QR code on the headstone, the detail recording will be emerged on your phone. That's very convenient and would be mainstream in the future, I think.

This is very interesting. Your response is long enough to write out for a post of your own. You could use the same photo. I'm sure there would be many others interested in reading about QR codes.

I havent seen a headstone in real life barring a few that I could during train journeys. But this one that you have, looks so good. I dont know if it is polite to ask (please ignore me, if it is impolite) - about the bend/angle at the top not being at the center. The ones I have seen in real life - most of them had almost a spherical (U upside down) top or even straight at the top.

My Mum chose this one but she was shown a catalogue of all different shapes and sizes. They are very expensive and she went with this one. You can see in the background that some are cemented all over or have decorative railings around them so there are lots of different styles. And it was not impolite to ask. Have a nice day.
