Should sons daughters of actors actresses be in same profession?

May 14, 2016 8:37am CST
For the last 10 years it has been seen that sons and daughters of renowned actors, actresses in India had joined the same profession, that is films. While many actor sons had been successful like Rishi Kapoor's son Ranvir Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan's son Rajesh Roshan, Babita's daughter Kareena Kapoor, to name a few. There are other cases like Jeetender's son Tushar Kapoor, Big B's son Abhishek Bacchan, Hema Malini's daughter Esha Deol. The big problem is comparison comes with the successful fathers or mothers. Viewers expect more from the new generation. Raj Kapoor's three sons Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor acted in films. But it was Rishi Kapoor who was successful. Dharmender's sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol acted in films. While Sunny was very successful, Bobby's career was mediocre.

@miniam Comparison comes when children join their parent's profession. In case of films it happens more because the common mass watch films and interact in the media.

If that's what the kids want then sure. I just don't think it should necessarily "be expected" of them. People (even celebrities and those related to them) should follow their dreams, as much as is possible, and do what makes them happy.

Thanks Lady Justice for the comments. Yes, children should follow those profession where they have proficiency, not the ones dragged by parents.

I see it the same as any other profession. If the children want to follow in their parents' footsteps, whether as an actor, a carpenter, a teacher, or anything else, they should do. If the parents have the chance to help their children on the way, they should do it. The children may or may not be as successful as the parents but that would happen in any profession.

@sathviksouvik Yes, if they're not very good at it. Encourage them, by all means, but they should also be encouraged to seek other options. My youngest son wants to be an actor. He is very talented but I'm still trying to get him to think of something different so he has something to fall back on should he need it.

Thanks pumpkinjam for the comments. Yes I agree with you. The trouble is if the sons daughters are not proficient in the same profession parents should ask them to try some other profession.

I don't think that there's any hard and fast rule. People should choose a profession based on their skills and talents, not what their parents do. I suppose that requires honesty on the part of parents if they recognise that their children aren't as talented as they think they are.

Thanks Nehalji for the comments. It is bad when parents unnecessary back those sons or daughters who dont have the talent.

I think the audience these days are wise enough to choose. Star kids can use their parents as a ladder to set their foot in the industry but they sure as hell wont stay for long if they don't do well. Industry has become very competitive and there is absolutely no place for mediocre actors. So the bad entrants automatically get filtered after a while.

Thanks Sushmita for the comments. But you see, those who are mediocres they are not out of the industry. for example Abhishek Bacchan does not have a capacity to give a hit on solo acting. But he acts with Ajay Devgan in Bol Bacchan, Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3, so the other superstars carry the films. Tushar Kapoor gets chance in Golmaal series.

There are some children of stars who will go into the same profession and make it big while others won't. I don't know about in your country but that is how it is here.
