Rock On, Brother, Rock On!

About 2:00 this morning, I had a serious case of the munchies, so I headed across the street to get a vending machine cheese danish from the laundromat, which sits on our main street, Manitou Avenue. If you head east on Manitou Ave, it's downhill, and you can really get up a good amount of speed on a bike or skateboard. Which is what a guy was doing as I was heading home--hauling you-know-what down dark of night Manitou Avenue on a mountain bike. A mountain bike equipped with a stereo, which was totally rad. I did, however, find his musical choice a little surprising. He wasn't blasting something you might expect from such a daredevil, like, say, Black Flag, or N.W.A., or AC/DC. Or, this being Manitou, some jam band or other wouldn't have shocked me. Dude was rocking "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock of Seagulls, which was awesome. Out of character? Sure. But awesome nonetheless. "Space Age Love Song" was the best thing A Flock of Seagulls ever did, so why not crank it on a dark, late-night, high speed ride? Or maybe it was just the radio, and that's just what happened to be playing as he zoomed past. But that would ruin the mystique, wouldn't it?

That hair kind of personified the 80's. It's one thing everyone remember's. That and "Relax."

How awesome to have a stereo on a bike! I'd like one on a horse. :)

I'm not quite sure how he did it, but it was loud.

@JudyEv - My friend mounted a bike radio on his bike for awhile back in the 90's. It definitely helped out on really long rides.

The thing I remember most about that band was the hair. If only the guy had the hair too! What a pleasant surprise to hear something so offbeat.

I never thought of that. I don't remember if he was wearing a helmet, but it would've been cool if he'd had the Mike Score look too.

I'd likely play 'Sabotage' by Beastie Boys if I was speeding downhill on my skateboard!

No argument. I saw them open for the Police and that was the song (not "I Ran") that got everyone going. (And no, they aren't on the list.)

Must have been a fun show. I think they were a better band than people who couldn't get past the hair gave them credit for.

That's too cool! You never know what you'll hear. I often hear cars going by very late at night with music cranked very loud and most times it's rap, but every so often someone has something unique going and it just makes me smile.

We get a lot of motorcycle traffic through here on nice weekends, some equipped with stereo's. One guy always jams Prince, but there's another that comes through blasting Barry White, which is kind of out of character, if you think about it.

They get made fun of a lot, mostly because of the hair, but they did have some good songs.
