Practical presents when my daughters got married.

We had a lot of money problems when my daughters got married. My husband had been diagnosed with an illness that ended in his death years later and which, up to now, has no cure.
Marriage in a special place with a big reception was out of the question so we cooked at home and even made my eldest daughter´s dress.
While we were sewing, for my eldest daughter (the one who got married first) I thought that we could give her a sewing machine as a present. She still has it after over 25 years and several life partners. I bought it in installments and then thought of another good idea as my daughter and her husband to be were both very poor as they were studying. I offered to give them a basket with all they would need in a month as soap, shampoo and the like for a year. They were very happy and more so as I extended the period for as long as they were at the University.
When my second daughter got married we did the same and she was as happy as her sister.

A lot of people don't have the money for a large wedding but a small wedding is just as beautiful. I once went to a wedding reception for everyone who came brought a dish (a pot luck type of thing) and it was so much fun and plenty of different types of food. Everyone enjoyed themselves. A month of soaps, shampoo and things like that for a year is a great idea.

To me that is the best type of wedding and food you could have.

The girls had a small wedding at home. It was beautiful and the food was all homemade.

I think the thousands of dollars spent on weddings these days are obscene!! That money should be used to get them started off in a good life! Your handling of their weddings and after is great!

I agree with you! Some people get indebted for life and some marriages don´t last that long. My husband and I always thought that we could not spend more than what we earned.

Those are wonderful gift ideas. It is hard to keep up with all the fancy and sometimes un needed trappings of a modern wedding.

I have seen on TV dresses for brides that were several thousand dollars. We made them with love and hard work.

They were very happy with them. Of course, we also had a party for them at our home.
