Here in the Philippines we have what we call OPM which stands for Original Pilipino Music . There is a law that mandates radio stations to play at least four songs done by local artists in an hour. As much as there are really good local music, there are also irrelevant ones... the type of music that when you listen to, you want to pull your eyelids with a pair of pliers. That sort of thing. Anyway, this morning, I was introduced to another type of OPM, Other People's Music. You see as all morning, I've been listening to the playlist my colleague gave me. She also works at a bar as a marketing assistant and occasionally, she would be asked to spin the decks and man the music booth. Her playlist consists of some of the popular international and local hip hop and rnb artists. I think she has over a hundred songs in the playlist because I haven't heard the same song played twice. I really don't mind as I listen to almost the same type of music. Now if it was something else, something that I didn't like, I still wouldn't mind. After all, music is a universal language. Do you ever look forward to hearing other people's music?

Wasn't aware there was a law like that. In France, they have a law that mandates radio station to play only French music.

I think the law is good, but the local musicians must be up to standard. I like to listen to songs that are in foreign languages too. Some Mongolian music are very nice. They bring you out to the grassland, and you can find yourself floating away.

Yup, agree with you about local artists and bands putting out good music. Some are indeed good and talented. Others sound like manufactured music idols who have zero talent but have the support of a well-oiled publicity machine. Mongolian music? I'll look for some at YouTube and give it a listen.

@allen0187 Mongolian music and Tibetan music are really good tribal music. They live in mountains or highlands, and their music reflects that.

What good it is to play a music done by one of our artist if it's a remake? I hate remakes they were people that has made originals but never got into the mainstream, which sucks.

For the most part -- YES!!!!! I have a boatload of friends whose tastes in music I trust. That's how I discovered Dale Watson, back in the late 90's: someone said, "You need to hear 'Nashville Rash.'" The only time I make an exception is when people think they're introducing me to things like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Journey, etc.

True that! If it wasn't for friends, I wouldn't hear about Alkaline Trio or Ben Harper or those obscure French hip-hop acts.

Not really - I am fussy with music - I dont like music that is repetitive nor music that has poor language or swearing in it. Not fond of Hip hop stuff either. Love Jazz, love Classical (but not too much) and I love pop

Yeah, the thing is you have to go through the play list first to determine if it suits your musical tastes.

As long as the melody is good and the lyrics, it's fine with me and I listen to them.

When you are happy, you tend to listen to the melody more. When you are sad, you tend to pay more attention to the lyrics. Fact.

If someone posts a link to a song I haven't heard, I'll listen to it, just in case it's something I might like. I might not like it, but I still want to hear it.
