Do Gloomy Skies Make Us Want to Eat Cake?

I believe that practicing moderation will allow us to eat cake longer than those who are indulgent. Trader Joe’s sells a package of four mini chocolate Bundt cakes with chocolate frosting and tiny chocolate kisses on top. I keep a package in my freezer, in case of emergency. If I take out half a Bundt cake (I slice them before freezing), and put it on a glass plate and nuke it for 35 seconds on 40% power in the microwave, then it tastes like it was freshly baked. My normal routine is to eat one once a week. I often slice up fresh strawberries and eat them together with the cake. But this week we have been suffering (hyperbole at work) from May Gray. This is a thick layer of coastal clouds that stretches from the Pacific Ocean all the way into the inland valleys of Southern California. It used to appear only in June, but about five years ago the weather people had to coin the May Gray term, because June Gloom had expanded to destroy another month. What is annoying is that it does not burn off in the mornings like it used to years ago. What’s even worse is that this daylong gray sky routine is making me want to defrost Bundt cake daily, instead of weekly. Is there something about gray skies that makes us crave chocolate? If so, that might explain why people who live in places where the sun don’t shine take on a Pillsbury Doughboy silhouette. Do you start having food cravings that you never used to have when the sun disappears?

I get food cravings whether the sun shines or not! I wish I could get a craving to exercise!

Right. What's up with that? Wouldn't it be nice if we craved what's good for us? "I feel the need to lift weights!" Not.

@ElusiveButterfly Exactly. I do not enjoy exercising or several other things that are good for me, but I do them. I like the results.

I don't suffer from too many food cravings and eat plenty at mealtime, but something like those cakes can be tempting. We are (carefully) addicted to their sea salt topped chocolate brownies right now, trying to eat only one small one a day.

I hadn't thought about it. I don't snack a lot, so I don't think that's the case. I hope the May Gray goes away and you can get back to your normal routine. Those Bundt cakes sound delicious. I've never seen them here.

They are in an end refrigerated case, with other pastry type items. In my store, this is near the cold cheese section.

@just4him Sometimes it pays off to wonder around and look at what we don't usually buy.

@ElizabethWallace I rarely look to see what is in there. Maybe I'll check it out. They do sound good.

Ice cream? Wow. That doesn't seem logical, since it is cold.

@ElizabethWallace I don't know. It's more of a schedule thing than a craving.

I have always wanted to eat cakes even the sky is not gloomy. But my mom and my boyfriend always remind me not to eat cakes as I might have diabetes from eating too much sweet foods.

So lack of sweets makes you want them. Interesting theory.

I can't say that I do. I'm a creature of routine when it comes to food.

I am always tempted to curl up with a book and drink tea all day on these gloomy days. However, I force myself to get out and do something and, yes, I do crave chocolate on those types of days!

You are stronger than I. Forcing myself takes lots of willpower. Maybe I should visualize you doing something and use that as motivation.

I haven't noticed chocolate cravings to be more intense at one time than at any other. They're pretty bad 24/7!

Sorry. I don't usually have cravings of any kind, so I noticed this one when it showed up.

Many people say they crave more comfort food in the winter. I tend to be less active in the heat and drink more margaritas, so my silouhette is easier to maintain in the winter.

Could very well be a result of boredom.
