Have You Ever Seen An Elk?

According to a recent report, Elks are thriving in North Carolina’s Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We drove through this park several years ago on our way to Tennessee, where we spent a wonderful week at a beautiful resort in Crossville, Tennessee. These regal and majestic animals can be seen in this valley in the early morning, in this isolated valley. They had to be reintroduced to this area, but are now plentiful, thanks to the park’s biologist who led the effort to bring over 50 of these elks into these mountains in 2001. Now, during the rutting season, you can hear the bulls bugle and butt heads in antler-rattling contests. Calves are born in the next Spring and the herds are growing. If you ever get the chance to see this marvelous animal, you will be excited, but don’t get too close. They can be VERY dangerous.

The elk are regaining a population in some protected areas in the USA. What kind of animals are unique to YOUR area?

@transcendent Oh, I love tigers. They are my favorite wild animal. I will have to research the south China tiger to see how it differs from other tigers. Tigers are such beautiful animals.

I've heard of these animals, but of course, we don't have them here in New Zealand. What a magnificent photo that is.

@IreneVincent believe it or not we don't have native mammals here, other than rats, bats and dolphins. All other mammals have been introduced. Our specialty is beautiful native birds.

@valmnz What are some of the native birds of New Zealand? And what are the mammals that have been introduced? I was not aware that there are no native mammals there. Of course, New Zealand is an island nation, so the animals would have had to swim there, I suppose. The birds could easily fly there and decide to stay.

The elk are beautiful animals. I'm sure you have many animals in New Zealand that we don't have here in the USA. What are some of the animals that are unique to New Zealand? Do you have lots of marsupials like Australia?

I have seen Tule Elk in northern California. Here is an old photo of my husband near two elk on his motorcycle.

Depending on which state you live in, I guess. Elk are common in several states though.
