And Suddenly, There Was Mr. Snake

As most of you know, I love to go for walks with my camera. We live on 40 acres in the country and there always seems to be something to take pictures of. My camera and I went for a walk this past weekend and I was walking along the tree line where I had seen some cotton-tail rabbits. Suddenly, I see something moving in the grass. Yes, it was Mr. Snake! I am not one who is terribly afraid of snakes, but when he raised his head up and looked at me, I will say that it gave me a bit of a fright! He was not as large as the one in the picture above, but he was the same kind, what we call a bull snake or chicken snake. He was about 3 feet long and rather skinny. Apparently, he had not been in our chicken house eating the eggs yet. I watched him as he climbed a fence post and took off up into a tree. I was intrigued by how quickly he slithered up into the top of that tree! I will be looking up into the trees more often now when I go walking!

I've only seen one snake this year so far, a small garter snake while I was walking the tracks looking for things to photograph. I'm hoping for some more opportunities now that I have a better camera.

Most people will run from a snake, but those of us who take pictures, will look for one! Are we a bit crazy or what? I had hubby "corral" a rattle snake one time while I went and got my camera!

@sgbrown I used to go out hunting them when I was younger, I'd keep them in a terrarium for a bit and then turn them loose back in the country.

@JolietJake I have to say that I have never gone looking for a snake before! My dad did bring one home for me when I was a kid. We kept him in a cage that sat on the ground and I would feed him mice from our feed bin. We let him go after a week or so.

When we moved out to the country, I had to get used to snakes being around. I wasn't too worried when I realized he was not a poisonous snake. I think he was more afraid of me than I was of him!

I do not like snakes. If I were to encounter one while walking I would let out a screach!

We only have garter snakes there and I have never seen one longer than about 18 inches. They give me a start as they are so rare I forget about them possibly appearing.

So you didn't actually get a picture of the one you saw? I wouldn't fancy meeting a snake, especially on my own property.

does catch ya off guard when one appears to've come from nowhere :) we'd one here who used to climb the pine 'hind the pond'n attempts to rob the birds'f their eggs. one'd here a horrible commotion 's they fought't off 'n then he'd fall down from high 'bove 'n land'n the rocks'f the waterfall. was a bugger to catch that danged snake, it'd many hidin' places 'round the pond. the hubs finally'd capture't, take't out to the back barns 'n turn't loose. sure 'nough, the next eve, all'd start all o'er 'gain. knew't was the same snake o'er a few days time from the battle scars't wore, lol. i'd a nice lil visit with a cottontail yesterday, when i went out to feed the boys their supper. 't showed no fear, sittin' not e'en 2 foot from the barn door. didn't mind me goin'n, gettin' the feed 'n comin' back out. once the boys were tended, i sat down'n the ground'n marveled't its gentleness....'n cursed the fact the camera was'n the house. i'd not worry too much 'bout the snakes bein' 'n the trees. they don't typically fall down'n their own. the birds'll let'cha know if'n somethin's amiss :)

I am amazed they can climb so well. We had one climb up to our deck using the bricks on the house. I could not believe it.

The way snakes can move and swim and climb is amazing! We sometimes get (harmless) grass-snakes in our garden but haven't seen any yet this year.

My daughter lives where the Black Rat Snake is around. She sent me a photo of the snake crawling up the side of the house to get into the attic....creepy!

That looks quite a long snake in the photo. They are good at climbing trees, aren't they?
