That's just the way it works...

So I was perambulating along the railroad tracks earlier to see what I could see. And I saw a raccoon. Well, half of a raccoon. The front half. The trains here haul grain. One of the cars spilled some. Mr Raccoon thought that'd be good to eat. In the middle of the tracks. And another train got him. And then something ate the back half of him. Bleh. Meanwhile, here's a photo of a snake to take your mind off of the dead raccoon. At least the snake is whole and alive...or at least it was when I left.

Hey, I only see half a snake here! I thought maybe you were going to say you saw this snake gnawing at the raccoon! May the raccoon rest in peace, or pieces !

@JolietJake Wow, that looks like he's swallowing that fish whole! He had sushi!

@JolietJake I saw a snake in the grass - when I was mowing today. It was a garter snake - what kind is this? It looks big...poisonous?

You show me yours, I have to show you mine... is that how it still works? Mine's captive, though... lives at the local sanctuary. They had him out last week for one of the school groups when I dropped by to try catching a glimpse of the leopards.

Mine could have been captive but I figured Scar would get jealous. This is where I was hanging out when I took the photos.

@yukimori It was a favorite hangout when I was a young kid, but there's so much trash there these days, and the area has really filled in with stuff washed down the creek when it floods...but I still had a very relaxing hour just sitting around and watching stuff

What kind of snake is it? It looks like a constrictor of some sort. We saw a gopher snake on the trail yesterday. I wonder why the vulture or coyote (or whatever) chose to eat the back half of the raccoon but not the front.

@JolietJake Non-venomous, the eyes suggest. Do they let you pick them up? Here in CA, our garter snakes do (though they emit a stinky substance in protest), but the gopher snakes are more likely to get irritated and bite you. I'm not sure about the king snakes.

Naw, there's nothing to be afraid of. They aren't interested in me, I'm too big for food and I wasn't threatening them in any way.

@Curlybobby I admit to actually being a bit excited as I was coming down the hill to the area and realized there were two of them prowling it.

Did you actually see this awful looking snake swimming in that water? I hate snakes so much, they are my biggest fear, right now, after looking at the picture, my feet are up on the couch because snakes have that effect on me.

@JolietJake OMG JJ, weren't you the least bit freaked out by that ugly creature? My skin is crawling right now. Has the Scar ever encountered any snakes, usually dogs, I don't know about cats, but dogs don't know what to do with them and usually steer clear of them.

@Juliaacv I used to go hunt snakes all the time, I have no fear of them. I'm not sure what Scar would do, probably attack it like a piece of string.

@JolietJake - "JJ" - That was probably the only raccoon in the world that did not wash its hands before eating. Bad habits will do it to a guy every time. He could have been at the faucet instead of in the middle of the train track.

If he'd have been smart, he'd have been eating the leftover squirrel corn out front like a couple others do

And the snake will be okay as he won't be tempted to eat grain - but he might be tempted by half a raccoon.

I think if I saw one big enough to eat the raccoon, I'd photograph it from a much longer distance just to be careful
