Why does Kansas get such a bad rap? Everyone thinks we're a bunch of hicks, or that we are dumb out here. But keep in mind, Lawrence, KS came up with basketball (ever heard of Naismith) and we kicked butt in football yesterday (Kansas City Chiefs), and there are a lot of good colleges out here, and we have beautiful sunflowers! We get a lot of tornadoes (obviously, Wizard of Oz, ha! Which is the only thing people seem to think of when they hear Kansas, "Oh, where's Toto?") Here's some more info about Kansas:Major industries - agriculture (wheat and other grains), aircraft manufacturing, automobile manufacturing Where Kansas got its name - Kansas was named for Konza (also called Kansa or Kaw) Indians who lived in the area.

Tornadoes are the worst. I've only "been" in one, and it was a small one, it passed right over our house but didn't take it up or destroy it, thank God. But I am also very terrified during tornado season. We don't have a basement so we would have to hide in the bathroom but there are windows in there, only other place would be under the kitchen counter, also not very safe.

I live in Kansas. I work in Nebraska, we are only 12 miles from the state line. I get tired of hearing about those Cornhuskers every day at work. My niece who now lives in California is always asked where is Toto when people find out she is from Kansas. I enjoy living in Kansas.

I used to live in Los Angeles and YES I heard that about six million times when I was out there. I got so sick of it.

The Wizard of Oz. No really, there are many other states with a much worse reputation, like Arkansas and West Virginia. I've met two people from Kansas and they are well educated and genuinely great people.

Well, thank you! :) What is bad about West Virginia? Arkansas is supposed to be country, right?

Now you missed some things, Jon Brown was from Osawotomie Kansas. Bleeding Kansas refers to Osawatamie Kansas where the Civil War started. Kansa was a neutral state and was split in the civil war another reason for bleeding Kansas. Mental Health started with John Brown's Preacher Friend supporting to buy a metal Health Hospital there now known as OSH. Now speaking of Mental Health, Kansas leads the Country in mental health. They are the best in CSO's thanx to Judy Thompson. They take better care of there clients giving them out care services that no other state I've lived in could touch
