In a discussion with Judy this morning we were wondering where the phrase "four corners of the globe" came from? I eventually decided to google it, because google is one of the most amazing informative tools one can have! The phrase is derived from the Christian Bible "The far ends of the world; all parts of the world. For example, Athletes came from the four corners of the earth to compete in the Olympics. This expression appeared in the Bible (Isaiah 11:12): “And gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” Although the idea that the earth is a flat plane with actual corners has long been discarded, the term has survived." I am glad that since then, the Earth was decalred round: "The concept of a spherical Earth dates back to around the 6th century BC, when it was mentioned in ancient Greek philosophy" . . . and later " The realization that the figure of the Earth is more accurately described as an ellipsoid dates to the 17th century, as described by Isaac Newton" So no falling off any corners of the Globe . . . you can keep walking till the end of time! did you know this? photo is my own - Art from the MAS Museum in Antwerp

What nonsense!! Everyone knows the earth is a flat, rotating disc. The only reason you don't fall off the end if you just continue walking is due to something known as the Coriolis force which applies to objects in motion relative to a rotating frame of reference!

I had no idea where that rather strange expression came from, though I have heard it all my life.

Yes, and you will also find the earth referred to as a circle in Isaiah. Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: (KJV)

@Inlemay Yes it is an odd phrase and probably why so many people thought it was flat until it was proven otherwise.

I believe old time sailors used to be quite concerned about sailing off the end of the world.

I did know the world was round so I would imagine you could walk and walk and never reach the end.
