Of Men's Sheds and Sausage Rolls

My photo today – as opposed to Vince's photo yesterday – is of some sausage rolls which Vince cooked yesterday. You can see where one has been removed - for quality control purposes. There are four fat ones on the left which we also ate and the others which are all reasonably uniform in size will be going to Men's Shed on Tuesday. Men's Sheds in Australia started off with many providing a place for Vietnam vets to hang out with others. Many encourage wood-working, welding and/of other pastimes. Some are now fitted out with a vast array of tools which negates the need for people to buy their own. The sheds provide a non-threatening environment and are a very positive point in every community where they are found. The Sheds now have members from all walks of life, not just vets. The one Vince goes to has a guest speaker each month. A few months ago Vince spoke about his trip to Nepal. Attendees are asked to bring a small plate hence the baking of the sausage rolls.

I'm very lucky as I don't like cooking. So he cooks and I clean up. :)

One wasn't enough. I had to have a second to make sure they were okay.

@CRK109 You can't have more than two or the chef starts to get suspicious!

The men's sheds have been great support groups for Vietnam vets especially as many have had a tough time as they've gone through life.

@JudyEv Are only the men allowed there or the families allowed once in a while?

@silvermist It's only men but Vince's group has a dinner once a year where partners are invited.

Sounds like a great idea. Does Australia celebrate Memorial Day this weekend too?

@just4him April 25 is the day the Australian and New Zealand forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey in 1915 and that is now designated ANZAC Day.

No, I guess our Anzac Day is as close as we get as that now celebrates the contributions of all forces in all wars.

Men`s shed sounds good, the men can go there and relax when they just want to be men without outside disturbances.

Exactly and it becomes very important to men - especially to the Vietnam vets.

@miniam I think women are better at seeking out help and companionship whereas men tend to close up more and go into themselves.

Oh my... wow. Those sausage rolls got me hungry. I think, Men's Sheds is a great community. I looked up a few images on the net about it and found a lot of interesting stuff. It is great that they provided this opportunity not only for vets. It surely did put their talents to great use and productivity.

It's sometimes the simple ideas that work the best. Just providing a safe place for men to get together and share stories and experiences has been a great success.

@JudyEv True... this is indeed a great idea. Most men at their age would probably be in beerhouses and drinking a lot without these activities

Oh that looks SO good! From here it almost looks like I could just help myself to one! The Sheds sounds like a wonderful "hang out" for the members. I'm sure they will have another enjoyable day on Tuesday!

The men all look forward to their monthly meetings now. They are great support for each other. Some would be at a very loose end with their Men's Sheds.

@Marty1 I think it is important to keep an eye on food that is being offered to others. And that means tasting it of course.

Very necessary in the cooking line! Sometimes you need to try several pieces before you're sure they are okay. :)

@JudyEv They would not have been taking up space in your fridge but in my tum! I love sausage rolls Judy. Many years ago we went to an Indian wedding and my daughter who was around 6 said it was not a proper wedding as there were no sausage rolls there! LOL

A shed might be where someone has their workshop, a bit like a garage. Usually just a simple building. We have a woodshed where we store wood; Herc (pet sheep) has a three-sided shed where he shelters from the rain and we have a shed that is a workshop.

That must be a wonderful place for the men to gather. The food looks delicious. What a great place for vets and others to gather. I don't believe anything like that was done in the states...(I could be wrong - I've been wrong before...)
