Holiday Weekend

United States
May 29, 2016 9:16am CST
In the USA, Memorial Day is tomorrow and many people will be home from work. It’s the “unofficial” beginning of summer, according to some newscasters. John Wooden said: “Make each day your masterpiece.” That’s good advice. Each day we have, should be important to us and we should TRY to make the best use of each day of our lives. Did you have special plans for this weekend? We had a family cook-out yesterday. Everyone prepared some food and the weather was very accommodating. It was warm, but comfortable in the shade. The screened-porch side of the house is on the shady side in the afternoon, so that’s where I chose to sit. My kids and grandkids and great grandkids played Corn Hole and jumped on the trampoline. Everyone had a good time. My oldest grandson told me that he is writing now and I was pleased to hear that. They stayed until way after dark and had dessert. I was tired and came inside to sit in my comfortable chair, and went to bed as soon as they all left about 10:30. My grandson didn’t know that I had published my first novel a few months ago and he wanted a copy to read, but then he left without it. He lives nearby so it’s not a problem. I had made hot dog chili and some banana bread. My youngest son cooked chicken and hot dogs on the grill outside and there was lots to eat. Macaroni salad, vegetable cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, deviled eggs. There wasn’t much left over after everyone had their fill. Wherever you are, I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Yes, it's always nice to have family around. I guess you are getting excited about your trip. I hope you have good weather and lots of fun. It rained again today. We are getting the rain from Tropical Storm Bonnie, which hit the East Coast yesterday. I visited the nursing home after my Christian meeting today and it poured down the rain again. The roads were flooded so it was not easy to drive home. Once I got home I was exhausted and went to bed about 8:30PM. So here it is now 5:23 AM and I'm up. I will have to get my nights and days sorted out again. Today is a legal holiday. Memorial Day. So, while many people don't have to go to work, others will be working overtime in stores, because there are lots of sales going on everywhere. I simply plan to stay home and avoid the crowds. It's not raining now, but I don't know what to expect later.

@JudyEv Me too. I don't even enjoy shopping that much anymore, but when I HAVE to go, I try to choose a NON busy day to do it, like the middle of the week.

@IreneVincent Maybe it's an 'older person' thing - avoiding sales and crowds on public holidays. I'm all for it! The avoidance that is! :)

My husband is off day and later we plan on grilling hamburgers on the backyard grill. I am glad your day and weekend has been nice.

The news report I watched last night, said that Memorial Day is the day that more hamburgers and hot dogs are grilled than any other day of the year, in the USA. I will agree with that.

So you will have a day off too. What kind of work do you do? Do you plant a garden?
