It is so popular in our country specially in the rural areas to celebrate the blooming of flowers in May.
To cap the celebration done at the end of the month, they reenact the search for the Holy Cross by Queen or St. Helena. Beautiful ladies act as Queens like St. Helena, Queen of Justice, Empress Queen, and so on.
A young boy also served as St.Helena's escort representing Constantine the Great.
The Queens walk on the road under beautiful arches decked with flowers of May and they were escorted by handsome men in the place.

Oh, I was once a Reyna Elena when I was young. It was a great feeling being chosen as Reyna Elena on Flores de mayo.

Yes, maybe because you look pretty! They use to choose the prettiest girl in town/in a place as Reyna Elena.

If you look back in the history, Constantine is the daughter of Queen Maria Elena and they went to find the cross so Constantine could win the war.
That's why I always wondered why the Philippine Santa Cruzan depicted Constantine as a young boy in the finding of the cross.

@acelawrites hahaha that's the weirdest part because God communicated to Maria Elena when Constantine was already in adulthood and ready to go to war and God or probably it was a prophet who told Elena that Constantine must find the cross so he would win the war. So it was impossible during the finding of the cross for Constantine to be just a small boy.
And in the Santa Cruzan in the Philippines, the event doesn't start with just a parade. It starts with the mass early in the morning after the finding of the cross of the crowned Maria Elena with the little boy Constantine.
It's kind of weird when you know the history.

@toniganzon yes, and our people just do it for the sake of doing it.

It could be a happy occasion. At least some people are still interested in it, while in some places, it seemed they are too lazy or maybe because nobody take charge of the festivity.

Yes, it is, however as time goes, little people participate or do it due to lack of interest or lack of time.

It is usually done in the evening, before that, women and children offer flowers to the image of Virgin Mary which they do while singing songs of praises.

So many of them. I just admire the way they lend their time and spend some money for the gown/costume.
