For many it means remembering those they'd lost due to wars that've happened in the past.
Many families lost loved ones in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam, those were the wars I'm more familiar with and now we have added to that list but all I could think of is Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan but I know there have been more.
I salute each and every family who has lost a loved one on the battle field and I thank each and every soldier who has or does serve to protect our liberty. THANK YOU!!
Here is a tidbit of history about this day:

It's important that we remember what Memorial Day is all about and thank our veterans.

And not just the veterans but also the families who suffered the loss of loved ones. Veterans day is in November.

I knew you had one I just didn't know when. I think it's a shame that most people only see it as a holiday to have barbecues (here in the US that is) Today I sit and remember dad who was in an awful position to have watched some of his buddies die. He, like many others, came home and had to battle the memories.

I never thought of the celebrations or festivals they have during this holiday as having anything to do with remembering the fallen @jaboUK but there is the cemetary on Fort Bliss where they place little flags on ALL the graves regardless of whether or not they served in a battle.

My dad wanted to serve so bad he tried to enlist in every service. He had incredibly rare blood so none of the services would take him.

I salute your dad for trying. The Army in the 1940s wasn't that picky and they did lose a lot of men on the field just because of a medical issue they weren't equipped to handle. I think that's where they learned so much about the needs of those with rare conditions.

I agree, this is a day to remember the fallen, not a start to summer. However, I don't blame those who go camping, swimming, or have a cookout, as long as they also remember the reason they are able to do that.

It is a time to reflect on the past and also hope for the future. Wouldn't it be wonderful if war disappeared. I too thank all who served to fight for peace.
